Captain John Price sat in his office, the soft hum of the fluorescent lights the only sound besides the occasional rustle of papers. His brow furrowed as he rubbed his temples, the weight of the taskforce's last mission still looming over him. There were briefings to read, reports to write, and yet, despite all the chaos, there was one thing he couldn't ignore—his growing exhaustion.
It had been an intense couple of weeks, and the last thing he wanted to do was stare at the ever-growing pile of paperwork. His mind wandered to a simpler thought, one that always brought him comfort: her.
Just as he let out a sigh, a soft knock on the door broke his reverie. He looked up to see her standing in the doorway, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. Y/N. His Y/N. His heart gave a familiar, unbidden leap at the sight of her, her belly round with their child.
She was beautiful, glowing with that natural pregnancy radiance. The golden wedding band she wore on her finger caught the light from the window, shimmering as she shifted the small dish in her hand. His favorite dish, he noted, the one she made just the way he liked it.
"Hey there," he greeted with a smile that came easy whenever she was near. She was always the bright spot in his day. She gave him a teasing look, her eyes full of warmth, before stepping into the room.
"Thought you might need a little break from all that paperwork," she said, her voice soft and melodic, the same tone that had comforted him countless times before.
"You're a lifesaver," he chuckled, gesturing toward the seat in front of his desk. "But you should be resting, love. Not making your way all the way up here."
She shook her head, her lips curling in a playful smile. "I'm fine, John. Just thought you could use some company—and some food."
He watched her approach, feeling his heart swell with affection. Despite how exhausted he was, she had this way of bringing a sense of peace with her, as if all the weight of the world could be momentarily forgotten in her presence. Without thinking twice, he pushed back in his chair and extended his arms toward her, his eyes softening.
"Come here, love," he murmured.
Her eyes widened, a playful glint flashing across them, before she gave a soft laugh and complied. She settled onto his lap, the warmth of her body instantly grounding him. She was so close now, and he could feel the rise and fall of her breath as she rested against him, her hands gently holding the dish of food.
He kissed her forehead gently, his thumb brushing across her cheek as he spoke with a low chuckle, "You shouldn't be up here, you know. You're carrying my kid, and you're still thinking about me?"
Her eyes softened, and she kissed him back on the cheek before pulling away just slightly, looking up at him. "I'm fine, John. And besides, I know what you're like when you're buried in work. Thought I'd remind you that there's more to life than all this paperwork."
He chuckled again, the sound deep and filled with affection. "You're right, as always."
She placed the dish on the small table beside them, taking a moment to adjust her position in his lap, still within the safe, comforting embrace of his arms. He closed his eyes for a moment, just savoring the peace of having her there.
She gently scolded him, her voice light and teasing, "I swear, you're going to make yourself sick with all this work. You need to take a break once in a while, John."
He grinned, though there was a hint of seriousness in his eyes. "It's hard to think about breaks when the world's at war."
"Maybe," she said, leaning her head against his shoulder, "but that doesn't mean you can't make time for the people who love you."
John let out a deep breath, holding her just a little bit tighter, needing the comfort of her presence to recharge. "You're right, again," he whispered, his hand resting gently on her growing belly. "I couldn't do any of this without you. Without both of you."
Y/N smiled softly, pressing a kiss to his neck. "Well, you don't have to."
For a moment, the weight of the world seemed to lift. It was just him, her, and the quiet tranquility of the moment. A much-needed pause, in the middle of chaos. And it was all he ever needed.
