The idea that this is only happening because it is happening, with the flip of a coin of eternal nothingness could also exist. It's scary. But also oddly comforting if you view it from other perspectives.
For example, passing could be similar to anesthesia. There's nothing to remember, forget, feel, fear, etc. Is it scary? Of course, but only because we're alive and it's impossible to comprehend not being here. It's scary because it's not preventable.
It makes you question why we are here then, doesn't it? The little instinct in our brains pushing us onwards for the activities and things we may feel or experience. When we die everything is erased (or is it?).
Working hard and trying to build a legacy is like planning for a party you won't attend.
There is also the idea we existed before we were born and don't remember it due to our own human-like limitations. We can never argue that our control is zero when comparing it to the laws of the universe, because how would we then understand what being conscious is? After this experience we may not be confined to our limitations, stuck in meat suits with only five senses.
Perhaps we are not human beings living in a spiritual existence but rather we are spiritual, celestial beings living a human experience. While our physical existence may be miniscual in comparison to the universe, our consciousness is far greater than one may imagine.
But what do I know? I haven't died yet.
