Before The War
I finished eating the food Roman left for me then went to the bathroom. I'd felt much better after eating and as much as I wanted to ignore the whole thing, I was prepared to tell Roman everything that's been going on. It was like now that I'd let The Wild One out Briar felt more in control and at peace with the whole situation, at least as far as talking about it. I changed my clothes for the night and returned to the bed. I pulled out a notepad and just wrote down some thoughts for about ten minutes, then Roman came back in, Sergeant hot on his heels. Sergeant came over to the bed and sat there on the floor staring up at me then started whining. Roman looked at me then at him and sighed.
"He's very needy," he said coming over and picking him up and I couldn't help but smile.
"Who isn't," I said as he handed me Sergeant. I put him on my lap and he curled up into a ball before pushing in closer to me.
"True," Roman responded running his hand down Sergeant's back.
"Did he eat?" I asked.
"Yeah, he did and I took him outside."
"Thank you," I said.
"No need to thank me we have shared custody, I should be pulling my weight when I'm here," he said and I smiled up at him. "I'm going to take the tray down, grab a quick shower, and then we can talk," he added.
"Okay, Chief," I said looking up at him not in a nervous I didn't want to discuss it way but in an admiring way. He always takes such good care of me, no matter the situation, he always knows what I need, what to do. Most of the time I don't feel like I deserve any of that, that I don't deserve him. But I enjoy every moment with him for as long as he keeps coming back to me. He leaned down and kissed me before taking the tray and leaving the room.
"What would we do without him Sergeant," I said but he didn't respond as he was asleep now. Twenty minutes later Roman had emerged from the bathroom his hair hanging down, wet from his shower. He only had a pair of black shorts on as he was still using a towel to dry his hair. I had laid down and was on my side staring at him with Sergeant pulled close to me. He stopped what he was doing when he saw me looking at him.
"You shouldn't look at me like that, that could get you into big trouble," he smirked, so I closed my eyes, to be a smartass.
"Why'd you close your eyes?" he asked.
"You should make up your mind Chief, do you or don't you want me to look at you?" I asked opening one eye. He threw down the towel and came over getting on the bed. I pulled the blanket over top of me, laughing as he got on. Sergeant got up and stared at us.
"Wildfire, your sass is going to be your downfall," he spoke wrapping his arms around me and pulling me to him.
"Who else but me can give you sass," I retaliated as I squirmed in his arms but since he was twice as strong as me, he pulled me on top of him and he tightened his arms so I had no where to go. I was still under the sheets and I slowly peeked my head out resting my chin on his chest and I gave him and innocent look as he glanced down at me.
"A lifetime still wouldn't be long enough to stare at that expression on your face, or stop enjoying the sass that comes out of that mouth. A lifetime would never be long enough to be able to love you. So, I say I won't just love you in this life, but the next, and the one after that," he said and I felt my heart ache for how much he's pushed into my heart. A heart that I never thought anyone could enter into. I ran my hand up his side to the tattoo on his chest and across to his shoulder before pulling myself up closer to his face.
