CHAPTER FOURTEEN MIDSUMMERS MADNESS

"i'm really scared, have you heard from jj at all?" lilith asked kiara as she watched the girl look at the dress fitted around her slim body, debating which dress to wear. "he hasn't responded to any of my calls or texts, what if something really bad happened?" lilith panicked as she sent through another text to jj.
"it's okay, lily. don't worry about it too much, he can protect himself." kiara tried her best to reasure the overwhelmed blonde. but they both knew that if jj didn't respond soon, lilith would spiral.
"have you girls decided what dresses you're wearing yet?" anna carrera asked cheerfully and she strode into the room, wearing a beautiful yellow dress that fell down to her ankles. lilith immediately smiled up at the woman who generously invited lilith to get ready for midsummers at their house.
"i feel disgusting." kiara stated with a frustrated look on her face as she gazed in the mirror at herself. she wore a long, silk purple dress and in her hair a headband with flowers. she looked beautiful, though she refused to admit it. liltih looked down at her own light red dress, a dress she hadn't worn yet so it was perfectly neat and tidy. she also wore a pearl necklace, the same one her mother used to wear.
"i know, it's just horrible." anna retorted, making her way towards kiara's drawers of clothes. "i'm asking you to relax and go to a fun party."
kiara rolled her eyes in the mirror, causing lilith to let out a quiet chuckle to herself. "i look like a bourgeoisie pig." kiara complained, turning around and making her way towards her mother on the opposite side of the room. lilith dropped her head down and continued to read the magazine she'd previously been reading.
"will you please not worry about socioeconomic injustice for one night?" anna asked, hopefully and she began to put her earrings in.
"mum, people not three miles from here have no power, no running water, and we're going to midsummers." kiara stated, tilting her head as her mother turned away from her. "that's so tone-deaf." she shrugged her shoulders.
"do you know how hard we had to work to get into the island club?" anna questioned her daughter, finally meeting her gaze.
"yeah, mum. how could i forget? you had to grovel for, like ten years-"
"twelve, and we also had to cough up a huge chunk of dough. and do you know why we did that?" anna asked as she paced around the room, doing different things whilst maintaining the conversation with her daughter. and lilith minded her own business, knowing she had no business to speak up.
