The Brew overflowed with soft chatter as customers filed through. Ordering, working, sipping. Customers stepped in from the cold to order hot beverages that would heat up their frozen bodies.
Many clutched at their cups, trying to generate as much heat as possible to beat the cold, November air. The soft hum of the heaters generated air that battled with the crisp breeze that whistled through the café.
Amongst all the madness, five girls were perched on stools, gathered around a table together. Their hushed whispers were drowned out by the buzzing café, concealing their secrets.
The five were spooked after their interaction with Detective Holbrook and the text they had received from 'A'. So after slipping home to change clothes, they ventured to The Brew to chat over coffee.
Ivy was sat on a stool next to Spencer. Her eyes were trained on her as the girl rearranged the fries from the whicker basket into piles onto the table. Ivy had no idea what she was doing, but it intrigued her. She watched as Spencer moved the fries, some carrot sticks and some tomatoes into the arrangement that she wanted.
This was all whilst the other girls were in a discussion. Ivy had drifted from it a while ago, and instead focused on what Spencer was doing.
However, she was interrupted when Emily spun to her and questioned the girl, "When was the last time your mom called you from New York?" She wondered, having asked Hanna the same question moments before.
"Saturday? She phoned me before we headed to the lodge," Ivy answered. "But then she phoned Hanna and I from the hotel yesterday morning," she added, glancing over to her sister, who gave her a nod to confirm.
"Who was that freaky woman at the funeral?" Hanna asked abruptly, switching their gazes to her.
"Which freaky woman?" Aria quizzed. "There was a couple, Han."
"The one in black with the veil, and she was just diving into that town car," Hanna explained with a shudder. That woman gave her the creeps. She was just a powerful presence that seemed to always get her way.
"Speaking of freaks, where's Melissa?" Emily wondered, spinning to look at Spencer. When the girl made no move to reply, Emily called out to her, "Spencer?"
Spencer's gaze finally lifted from the food in front of her, and she faced the girls with narrowed eyes. "What?"
"Where's your sister been?" Emily repeated.
"D.C.. She's interviewing for an internship," Spencer responded. She squirmed in her seat, itching to get back to rearranging the food on the table.
"With who, Satan?" Hanna scoffed.
"Wait," Ivy jumped in, her eyes narrowing. "you think that Melissa was the woman in black?" She speculated.
Hanna spun to her sister. "Do you—?"
