Chapter 20: What lies beneath the sand

The elder looked at you, a dumbfounded expression on his face as he stood up and walked out of the camp- you and Itara quickly followed him as he began to kneel and pray into the sand. You both watched the old man curiously before he stood up and turned to you both; bowing his head to you as he faced you.

Elder: " I never imagined running into THE goddess' son of all people, I had to thank the sands for bringing you here "

You: " Please don't treat me any different, I have my own reasons for being here "

Elder: " Ah yes, what is taking you to the night kingdom young lord "

You: " again just (Y/N) is fine, I'm looking for someone- they are a friend who returned home there and hasn't kept in touch for some reason "

Elder: " I see.. tell me their name and I'll see if anyone knows them "

You: " Kaya, her name's kaya "

Itara quickly pulled her bow on you, aiming the arrow at your temple as she began to snarl and glare at you- the elder seemed displeased by the response aswell but he didn't take such a threatened or violent response and instead set his staff down and looked at you curiously.

Elder: " Boy, you know of her title right? "

You: " Yeah wolf quee- oh... "

Itara: " Yeah you get it now, we're suffering because of her- her father went enraged and thrust the whole place into eternal night because she left! "

You: " Are you asking her to sacrifice her own life for a bunch of people she doesn't know- there's a reason she left and you fucks are lucky she went back! "

Itara: " How dare y- "

You: " No, how dare you! You wouldn't risk your life saving a bunch of people you've never met after probably being forced into a position "

Itara: " Yes I wo- "

You: " You can say that all you want but the fact that the people here seem to know you already, I'd say you only left with people you know instead of others who were also in danger right, so can you look me in the eyes and say you would? "

Itara: " No... I guess not... "

She finally lowered her bow, you didn't want to deal with people like her anymore and quickly grabbed your stuff before intending to leave- you began to head out of the camp when you saw the sands begin to shift below you making you quickly jump back. The sands began to fall as a bunch of people; around 180 of the 200 people there turned into tendrils expelling from the mouth of a giant beast- people's memories of them soon vanished as they realised that those people were never real and were used to lure them into one spot long enough.

People still in the camp began to fall towards the centre of the mouth, only now numbering 20 in total and you began to jump into the gaping maw of the beast with them despite Itara and the elder attempting to stop you; you began to free fall before losing the transformation and flying to catch the falling people before lifting them back up- you carried as many as you could in your arms before lifting the rest with air spirits.

Everyone was soon on safe sands, looking down at the large gaping mouth of the beast as it swallowed only sand and began to shift since it grew confused on why no prey fell into it- the beast began to rise until it was fully emerged from the sands, luckily the desert was countries wide or else the beast would have covered a kingdom and it's neighbours.
