I woke up on my day off. Austin was flying in the visit that day and I was going to pick him up with Winter. She was so excited to see Austin again. There were some nights when they spent well over an hour talking to each other. Austin would even help Winter with her homework. He was a good man for Winter.
Winter was already up and asking a million questions on when we would be getting Austin. She was so excited, a giant smile on her face.
"Mom, when do we leave?" Winter asked.
"Soon," I replied as I started making breakfast. "Now stop asking or I won't bring you with me."
Winter dropped her head onto the counter, sighing heavily. "Austin needs to hurry up. He's taking forever."
"He'll get here when he gets here," I replied. "Now set the table."
"Can we take him out to lunch afterward?" Winter asked. "We could take him to get pizza."
"We'll have to see how he feels," I replied. "Flights can be tiring."
"Can you take me on a flight one day," Winter asked.
"One day," I replied.
Winter went to get some plates. "Are flights scary?"
"Not really. If it's your first time, then it can be a bit unnerving," I finished the food. "Now bring your plate over."
Winter shuffled over with her plate. I put food on it before carrying it over with my plate. We ate together, Winter finally quiet for a moment. She got up and went to the sink to wash the dishes. Because of her crutches, it was harder to carry dishes. We had an agreement that she could wash the dishes and I cleared the table.
A few hours after breakfast, Winter and I got ready to pick up Austin. Winter sang along to the songs on the radio as we drove with the windows down and the wind blowing through our hair.
When we got to the airport, I opened the door for Winter and we went through the doors. We stood in the waiting area outside of where arriving flights showed up. I had my arm around Winter's shoulders as she leaned against me. We waited for about fifteen minutes before I saw Austin walking through the crowd. I pointed him out to Winter and she took off on her crutches to meet Austin halfway.
He instantly smiled as soon as he saw her and ran to meet her. He picked Winter up, causing her to drop her crutches as he swung her around. They both had giant smiles on their faces.
As I got closer, Austin moved Winter to his hip with her arms around his neck. Winter was eight years old but Austin held her like she was much smaller. Austin pulled me in for a hug while still holding Winter.
"Hey, baby," Austin greeted as he set down Winter. She still held onto him. "It's good to see the two of you.'
"How was your flight?" I asked as I pulled away a little.
"It was alright but it was too long," Austin said. "I missed you guys a lot."
Winter couldn't wipe her grin off her face. "We missed you a lot too, Austin. I missed you more than Mom did though."
Austin chuckled. "I'm sure you did. Are you ready to have some fun?"
She nodded quickly. "Yes, I am! Can you give me a piggyback ride to the car?"
Austin picked Winter up and grabbed one of his bags. I grabbed the crutches and his other bag before leading the way to the car. We got loaded up and was on our way without any interruptions. I was surprised that no one recognized Austin in the airport. Even when covered up, he was a very recognizable person.
We arrived at my apartment. Winter had not stopped talking the entire time we were driving. I helped Austin carry his bags in as Winter walked beside me. We took his bags up to my room and joined Winter in the living room. She was talking Austin's ear off with everything that had happened since he had gone. He listened very intently, a big smile on his face.
Winter finally took a pause. "Mommy, can we have lunch soon?"
"Of course," I replied. "What do you feel like, Austin?"
"Whatever you make, babe," Austin replied, sounding a bit tired. "I'm not too picky right now."
"Okay," I replied. "I'll make us something. Do you want to take a nap after we eat?"
Austin nodded, the tiredness really starting to show. I made us a quick lunch that we ate in the living room. Austin went upstairs to my room to take a nap as Winter and I stayed downstairs. Winter stayed quiet, drawing in her coloring book. I sat with her with a book in my hands.
About two hours later, Austin came back downstairs. His hair was down and in an absolute mess. It was cute that way and it was one of the reasons I was so attracted to Austin. He was also so sweet to Winter and basically treated her like his own child. Winter was my priority and any partner of mine needed to treat her well. Austin was already doing amazing at that.
We decided to go out for dinner. It was Austin's treat for letting him stay with us and he wanted to spend as much time with us. He took us to a Mediterranean place in downtown Chicago. It was a cute place called Zizi's cafe. We sat down and ordered. Winter was acting silly, laughing and moving around. She eventually sat down in Austin's lap, all smiles and giggles. She had never acted that way towards any of my guy friends. She must have really enjoyed Austin.
When our food came, she got off of Austin's lap but stayed next to him, still talking our ears off about school. I watched Winter with a smile on my face. That girl was something else. But it was good thing that she approved of Austin. Both of them needed to get along in my mind in order for the relationship to work out.
We decided to take a walk after dinner. Winter was ahead of us, humming some song as Austin and I held hands. It felt like we were a married couple with our daughter. We stopped at a park to sit and enjoy the afternoon. It was a nice sunny day.
At dinner time, we went to a Mexican restaurant and got food to go. We took the food back to my apartment and sat down at the table to eat. It was a good day and we all enjoyed it. Winter was tired from it all and laid down on the couch. We joined her to watch a movie after a few minutes. She put her head in Austin's lap, sighing heavily. It was a long day but we got to spend it with Austin.
