I walked through to the kitchen to make myself something to eat. It was later in the morning and I hadn't eaten before I dropped Winter off at school. Austin left at the same time to go to the recording studio so I was by myself. My due date was coming at anytime and I was the biggest that I had ever been. My pregnancy with Winter didn't have me feeling that big.
I sat at the table to eat. I was almost done when a sharp pain went through my body. I gripped my stomach as waves of pain started going through my body and there was a pressure in my lower back. I knew it was labor so I started grabbing the things we needed for the hospital trip. I didn't want to call an ambulance so I grabbed my keys and headed for my car. I had a high pain tolerance but labor was still very painful.
I got to the hospital in one piece and walked in. I was checked in quite quickly with how close my contractions were. I had one of the nurses call Austin while I was pacing the room. I couldn't calm down without having Austin there. He needed to be there to witness the birth of his child.
As we waited, the nurses helped me change into a hospital gown. It wasn't much longer before Austin came rushing in. As he pulled me close, I felt calmer and more relaxed. He was there and I could have the baby.
Austin pulled away and placed my face in his hands. "I'm having one of our friends pick up Winter when she's done with school and bring her here."
"Okay," I said before a contraction went through me and I shuddered in pain. Austin held onto me as the contractions kept coming. Labor went on for a few hours and it hurt the entire time. I didn't want pain meds until it was absolutely necessary. I did the same when I was giving birth to Winter. I had a very high pain tolerance, though the birth was different. It hurt just a bit more.
The nurses got me into the bed as the contractions were getting closer. Austin gripped my hand with both of his, watching me. I held onto his with as much as I could. The nurses told me when to push and I listened. I wanted it to be over with.
After about ten hours, I gave my final push and our baby girl came out, crying out. One of the nurses commented on how strong our baby's lungs were. I fell into the bed as the nurses took care of my baby. Austin got to cut the umbilical cord and our baby was placed on my chest. She was quieter than at first and she seemed to calm after being on my chest.
After a bit of time of bonding with our baby, one of the nurses came over. "What are we thinking for the name?"
I looked over at Austin and smiled. "I think we'll name her Daphne Dakota Post."
"That's beautiful," Austin murmured. "I like it."
"It's a good one," the nurse said. "We'll be back in a few to check up on everybody."
I brushed the little bit of dark hair on Daphne's head. Her eyes were open and she was looking around. Austin took pictures before sitting back down next to us. He had such a loving look on his face as he watched us.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" I asked.
"Because you're amazing," Austin said. "You just pushed that kid out of you and both of you are great. I mean, look at her! She's beautiful. We made that."
I laughed. "Yes, we did. And she is beautiful. I can't wait for Winter to meet her."
"She's at the neighbors for tonight since it's so late," Austin said. "I'm going to spend the night here with you two. I don't want to leave you guys alone."
I smiled tiredly at him. "Okay. Once the nurse comes back in, I'm going to try and go to sleep. Giving birth is very tiring."
"Let me hold her," Austin said, reaching for Daphne. "You need rest."
He took Daphne into his arms and sat in the chair, holding her for a bit. The nurse came back to check on us and gave us a pass. Austin walked around with Daphne to calm her down as she was fussing. I went in and out of sleep, eventually passing out completely.
I woke up in the morning to Daphne crying and Austin trying to calm her down again. She had already been changed so she was most likely hungry. I took her from Austin and started feeding her. The nurse came in to check on us after about an hour and said that everything looked good. Daphne was a healthy weight and she passed her checkups with flying colors.
When Daphne was done feeding, Austin took her back and sat down. "Are you up for a visit from Winter?"
I nodded. "Yeah, definitely. I want her to meet her sister."
"I'll call the neighbor to bring her here," Austin said. "I've been hearing all about how excited she is that Daphne is here."
"That'll be great to have her here," I said. "I'm going to rest a bit before she comes. Can you get me something to eat?"
"Of course." Austin looked down at Daphne. "I don't want to hand her back yet."
I snorted. "Okay but the mother of that baby is hungry."
Austin sighed jokingly, getting up and placing the baby in her crib. "I'll be back in a few."
Daphne babbled for a little before falling asleep. After about a half an hour, Austin walked in. He had a grin on his face and a bag in his hands.
"I've got a surprise for you," Austin said.
Behind him, Winter popped out. She had a big smile on her face as she came over to my bed and hugged me. I was so happy that she was here. Once we hugged, Winter went to check out the baby.
"She's so tiny," Winter said. "What did you name her?"
"Daphne Dakota Post," Austin replied as he set down my food.
"That fits her," Winter said. "I like it. When can I hold her?"
I started to open the bag with my food. "When she wakes up."
"We're going to be best friends," Winter said as she peered down at Daphne. "I can already tell."
Austin chuckled. "I sure hope so. I don't want to have any petty fighting happen."
I snorted, finishing my bite before responding. "That's still going to happen, baby. Trust me on that one."
Winter rolled her eyes. "Whatever you say, Mom."
Austin and Winter talked for a little bit as I ate. Daphne eventually woke up and Winter got to hold her. Winter was old enough to hold her sister standing. I was surprised how gentle and caring Winter was with her sister.
The nurses came in and out of the room. The doctor who delivered my baby came in and updated me on when I could go home. I was being discharged early the next day. I was so happy to get home and rest in bed with my children. I also wanted to put Daphne in the baby bed that we had set up.
I knew having Daphne was going to be hard but I had Austin with me. He was going to be an amazing father. He already was to Winter and by looking at how he acted Daphne already, he was going to be even better. I married a phenomenal man.
