"That's it- I'm done. I can't do this anymore."

The door slammed as John Harrington rubbed a hand over his face in blatant frustration. His girlfriend, Amanda, now ex girlfriend, he supposed, just walked out after an argument. It had started over a misunderstanding, but had quickly grown into the one that ended their relationship.

He sat there, but he just couldn't quite believe it yet. He had lost her.

Amanda Donner was, as many would say, headstrong. Once she made up her mind on something, nothing could get her to change it. Even with relationships.

Which is why she walked out the door, leaving the only guy she had ever loved behind her. Quite possibly for good. And the worst part? She couldn't even recall how the fight started. But she could never forget how it ended.

It only took John Harrington 36 hours to realize that he couldn't handle not being with her. But the problem was, she was an incredibly difficult woman to get ahold of.

He looked everywhere for him. He walked over to her apartment to find it completely empty (even her two roommates were gone). He checked the library, and couldn't find her anywhere. He even went as far as checking the dock on the lake in the off chance that she would be walking it like she sometimes did.

He couldn't find her anywhere.

While Amanda was most definitely a strong headed woman, that didn't mean that she could go through the hard parts of life alone. She tried that once, and failed miserably. Which is why she drove the two and a half hours home. Sometimes, you just need your mom.

And as laid on the bed of her childhood room, her mom stroking her hair as she cried about leaving John behind, she realized that she had made a tremendous mistake.

She needed to find him, she needed to fix this- she needed to fix them.

She spent the rest of the weekend at home, figuring out what to say and how she was going to fix this. When Sunday came around, she made the drive back to Duluth. She found that the butterflies in her stomach had quickly turned to knots the closer that she got to her college town.

When she finally made it, she turned down the street towards to University, and sighed. She didn't know what she would do if this backfired on her. She didn't know what she would do if he didn't want her back.

When she pulled up to the familiar building, she took a moment to gather herself before pushing the door open and stepping into the cold, Minnesota air. Duluth was typically colder than home- being right on Lake Superior will do that to you.

Amanda slowly walked to the door, every part of her pride telling her to turn around and not look back. But she knew that if she did, she would carry that regret for the rest of her life.

So, she knocked on the door.

John was currently walking around downtown, trying to clear his mind. If he knew Amanda, he knew that she wouldn't come around. Her pride wouldn't let her.

The thought turned sour in his mind. Of course she wouldn't come around. Of course now he was stuck looking over his shoulder, hoping to see her walking down that street. Of course he knew that it would take him years to get over her.

The thought frustrated him. He knew that he wouldn't be able to date another girl while he felt this way about her- it wouldn't be fair to any girl, to put her through that. So, he guessed he would have to just settle for what he had- absolutely nothing.
