Chapter 30 - Losing Skydor

"I don't remember coming this way when Xander brought me here," Keira frowned.
Three long passages later had left her confused and a little uneasy.

"I'm taking you to my mother,"

"If it wasn't for the situation, it would sound like you want to marry me," Keira chuckled.
Keira waited for a reply, but Skydor trudged on, determined. He was in a deep state of thought, planning their journey and ways to escape the Maflakoves that would be roaming around.

"But I'm guessing you'd never dream of it," Keira mumbled to herself.
She shook her head and mentally scolded herself for focusing on something that had nothing to do with the task ahead. Keira was trying to be positive, but the long journey was bringing thoughts and visions of failure and death. The image she had seen in the special book Miedesa had given to her were flooding into her mind.

Keira suddenly wished she had shown Xander what the book was about, maybe he would have been able to understand and to help her.

"Careful," Skydor warned.
Keira narrowly missed a large rock jutting out of the wall beside them. If it wasn't for Skydor, her side would have been torn apart.

Focus! Keira thought to herself. She could not be so absent minded when she was about to fulfill her destiny.
She followed Skydor down the narrow passageway and mimicked his movements to protect herself from getting scratched or cut.
They reached the end of the fourth hallway, a large stone door with tiny holes radiating light from the outside. Skydor stepped forward and started to push with all his might. The muscles in his back tensed and he groaned as the door slowly started to move.

"A little help here," Skydor grunted out as he continued to push.
"Oh," Keira said, embarrassed. She was glad it was slightly dark so Skydor would not notice the sudden flush of color in her cheeks.

Keira took a step forward and started to push too. Her arms complained at the sudden strain but she used all the strength she could muster and surely, the door started to open a little faster.

When they had created a space large enough for a man to fit through they stopped. Skydor leaned onto the door and Keira kneeled to catch her breath.

"Are we close?" Keira asked. She took a deep breath and lifted herself off the floor slowly, so she would not become dizzy.
Before Skydor could answer, a loud screech caused Keira to block her ears. She crouched down in fright and looked to Skydor questioningly.

"Vulturapters," Skydor spat out. He cursed under his breath and motioned for Keira to get up and stand next to him.

"Vulture what's?" Keira whispered.

"Vulturapters. The Maflakof eyes. They watch the prey and report everything they have seen and heard."

"But how did they know we would be here?"

"They don't. They're probably just.. traveling," Skydor sounded a little unsure, as if he was trying to convince himself of what he was saying.

"Does that make sense to you?" Keira mumbled.

"I know Keira I'm trying to think. It doesn't make sense that they would be waiting here for us."'
"So? What now? How do we get out of here without needing seen. Talieyes said that the Maflakoves would be looking for me."

Skydor almost jumped as Keira spoke.
"Yes! That's it. So they need to watch every possible place you could come out of."

"But I won't come out of any place will I?" Keira could see that Skydor was formulating a plan with the way his eyebrows were furrowed. His sapphire blue eyes gleamed and swirled like the waves of an ocean.
