Chapter twenty four - Kathahia

Keira coughed and cleared her throat to get the smoke out and she urged Licluc to move faster. Skydor had to be confronted before he was gone. The rhythm of Licluc' hooves matched Keira's heartbeat. Her palms started to sweat and she felt hot around her neck and inside her tank top. Licluc started to slow down and as they started to roam outside the boundaries. The smell of the trees was unfamiliar to him and he became more and more resistant.

"What is it? Let's go there's nothing to be afraid of."

Instead of the usual sound he made, whines and animalistic cries rang in Keira' eyes.

"I won't hurt you, I just need your help."

Dark figures that seemed to be dancing in the afternoon sun moved farther and farther way as Keira tried to convince the hathogilar to move. Without it, she couldn't get very far.

"Please. Kathahia, please."

The hathogilar whined again, this time louder than before. Keira jumped off and patted him on the neck.

"You know what? I'll do it by myself. Go back to the sporting compound."

Keira wasn't sure that Licluc could understand, so she pointed and motioned for him to go. The warm creature nuzzled her neck and then turned his back and galloped off. Keira sighed and started to sprint towards Kriagdor's afternoon spot. Smoke surrounded Keira and it encouraged her to run faster. The black spots stayed in sight but never seemed to get closer and it made Keira want to lift her arms and fly.

"If there was ever a time I needed wings, it would be now" Keira muttered to herself breathlessly.

Ad she did, she seemed to move faster, until she had caught up with the crowd. What Keira didn't know was that they had slowed down, as the escaped ferliobogs were too tired to keep moving fast.

"Skydor!"

Keira pushed through the crowd filled with captured guardians and ferliobogs. She didn't mean to be aggressive but her anger had grown when she spotted the tall black haired figure that was Skydor.

"You." Keira grabbed Skydor's arm and he spun around to face her.

"What was that?"

"We decided to rescue the remaining ferliobogs." Skydor spoke calmly, despite the way Keira had grabbed him.

Keira' s chest rose and fell slowly as she tried to calm down. Her eyes glowed with fire. She lifted her arm to slap Skydor but he stopped her and placed her small hand gently on his cheek.

"Don't do that," Keira retrieved her hand from Skydor's face. His charm was not going to work this time, "You are such an idiot Skydor. Could you not to do it at night?"

"This was less obvious. No one expected it."

"And capturing guardians? Setting everything alright? Who do you think you are? You cannot just decide to take matters into your own hands," Keira paused but then decided that she didn't want to hear his answer.

"Does Taurma even know about this? Why would you do this Skydor?
I never agreed to violence and now you've ruined everything. Surely guardians are going to come after you and destroy the ferliobog population."

"Humans must also suffer for what they've done to us. We are tired of being mistreated and taken away from our homes. Violence is the only way they'll listen."

"Is violence not what started the whole thing? You want to solve something by doing exactly what is being done to you and you think you will get different results?"

"Keira."

"You're just as bad as we are. You know, I'm not even upset that you decided to rescue them. It's the fact that you kidnapped innocent guardians and set the ferliobog containment on fire."

"Innocent? Tell me what's innocent about torturing and experimenting on creatures until they are on the verge of insanity?"

"Did they hurt you?"

"They hurt my kind. And I stand for the people that I love. Who do you stand for Keira? You say you are trying to help us but you come to defend the very people we are working against. You need to decide whose side you're on before you ruin everything."

"I stand for peace Skydor. Harmony, unity between humans and ferliobogs. But that can never happen when everyone is fighting each other."

Keira wiped the tears that were now falling from her eyes. Her cheat tightened and she felt like a ball of emotions was exploding I'm her throat. Keira felt like sobbing and screaming but she was silent. She took a knife from one of the men and cut the ropes of the guardians who had been captured.

"Let's go."

Keira walked away and the four men followed behind her.

"What you said there Miss was very-"

"Don't tell anyone about this. You will run to the council and tell them that you escaped from the burning containment. None of you know my name and you have never seen me in your life. Please do not thank me because this never happened."

Without another word, the scarred men split ways with Keira.

Keira instantly got used to the sound of the ringing alarm. The intensity of the high pitched instrument did not bother her at all. It caused her to focus and think clearly. In the few minutes she had been gone, some evacuation procedure must have taken place. Guardian soldiers had probably been sent out to look for the perpetrators and the only place everyone else would go is to the arena. With out any hesitation Keira sprinted to the arena and caught up with the last few people who were entering. The buzz of voices and laughter put Keira on edge. It was the same sound that had made her run away the day of the incident. Keira swallowed and sat down next to the most friendly bunch she could find. Her increasing heart rate drowned out all the noise she was hearing.

When the crowd was silenced, Keira breathed a sigh of relief. It was weird that a sound that was supposed to be familiar was making her uncomfortable.

Mr Briggs' voice sounded in every corner. He sounded upset, which made Keira feel like she was going to be in trouble again.

"-We have no choice but to continue with training and normal activities until such a time when your lives are endangered. This was a small fire and it is being investigated. I'm sure there's nothing to worry about."

Keira tried to remember what he had said before, but she decided that it wasn't important. Keira's mind wandered off. She hoped the men she has helped had not revealed her identity . A girl bumped Keira's knee on her way out. Keira was about to protest but she looked around and saw that people were filing out of the wide arena doors.

A pair of arms enveloped Keira. She immediately knew it was Melanie, her bittersweet scent was hard to miss.

"When Jason told me you rode off on a hathogilar I was afraid for your life. The last time you dissapeared you came back broken," Melanie laughed as she spoke, her voice was shaky but she was relieved.

"I'm here aren't I?"

Keira turned around and embraced Melanie. It felt so good to have someone to hold. All the anger she had felt before had dissipated, leaving her helpless.

"And that's all that matters," Melanie smiled and linked arms with Keira.

"But only for the moment," Keira smiled back as she muttered to herself. She knew that all Melanie could hear was the noise of footsteps and excited teenagers.
