Chapter seven - The First Lesson

After a night of screaming, sweating and cowering in her blankets, Keira lazily got out bed and wheeled herself to the bathroom. She ran her fingers through her short brown hair and scratched her scalp to try and erase everything she had seen in her nightmares.

Keira hated the fact that the nightmares would always come back when everything was going fine. They seemed to be a reminder of how messed up and terrible everything around her was. How cruel humans were as a community and how the poor ferliobogs suffered because of a few dangerous creatures that had attacked 'innocent' people.

In that moment, while she sat and let the hot water pour into the bathtub, she felt so helpless. Keira was sure that her heart was aching and that the pain she had felt in the arena was coming back. The words the council members had said echoed into her head, making her bury her head into her hands and shout out in frustration.

"Stupid, stupid council!" Keira shouted.

Keira made up her mind; she couldn't let it go on any longer. That connection she had felt and the moment with the black ferliobog had put something in her heart. A fire, a desire to stop humans from ill-treating the ferliobogs. She felt a strong attachment to them, the very same feeling she had for Bo.

Keira got up, using her wheelchair arms as support and she looked at herself in the mirror. Her clear skin had been turned to a nightmare with all the scratches and bruises on her face. Large dark circles enveloped her eyes and their colour had turned to red. She touched her face and absentmindedly counted the scratches and marks on her face.

To Keira they symbolized what was happening to the ferliobogs. She imagined that if they were human they would look just like she did at that moment or even worse. Their skin probably would've turned blue and green like the fur of the two ferliobogs she had seen in the arena.

"I'm so sorry," Keira said to her reflection.

She hoped in her heart that somehow Bo could hear her, that he knew she still loved him. Keira felt a lump rise in her throat and she let the tears she had been keeping in her system pour out. Keira sobbed into her bathing robe at the vivid image of the small green ferliobog being whipped and forced to adhere.

Keira wasn't only sorry for the way no had been treated but for the way every ferliobog that had been captured had been treated.

Her sobs became even louder as she thought of the ferliobogs pleading eyes and the saddening whining sounds it had made.

Keira slowly removed her pink nightdress and slipped into the bathtub. The sweet scent of the milky bathing oil filled her nostrils and she leaned back into the wall of the bathtub, let her muscles relax as her tears coursed down her cheeks.

After half an hour of soaking Keira got out of the bathtub and dried herself off. She moisturized her skin with the healing elemi oil her nurse had given to her and she slipped in a pair of sweatpants and a tank top. She heard the front door open and she hobbled to the main lounge to see who it was.

Keira was welcomed by a smiling Xander sitting on the double couch with his briefcase next to him. He wore a tight white shirt and black jeans paired with blue and orange vans.

"Hey," Keira said.

She tried as hard as she could not to topple over and focused on getting to the couch.

Keira figured that he was quite young, unlike most of the council members so she didn't feel the need to say good morning sir or something like that.
