Chapter twenty two - Family Reunited
Keira felt a little powerful with all the men following her. She was walking next to Kriagdor, but this time she didn't feel overshadowed or afraid. Knowing that he trusted her was a good feeling, and she was confident that she would not let him down. It was hard for Keira to keep up the pace, her short legs moved briskly while the men took long graceful strides. It was dark, but Keira could sort of see where she was going with the help of the flame torches. Only five men besides Kriagdor and his son were accompanying her. Keira wasn't expecting anything major to happen. It would be quick; they would get in, find Taurma and Chloriyen and get out.
Excitement shortened the journey, and in no time Keira could see the silhouettes of the gaurds on duty.Something resembling a loud drum was pounding in Keira's chest. She hid behind a large tree and motioned for the men to lie down on their stomachs. When they had settled down, Keira spoke.
"Alright, here's what we need to do. There's another way round, unless we are willing to wait until they've fallen asleep?"
"The sooner we do it, the better." Kriagdor whispered as he crouched next to Keira.
"Okay. Kriagdor, you're going to stay with the rest. Skydor and I will go and fetch the chief and his daughter, then he will return with them alone," Keira instructed briefly.
"Right," Kriagdor replied with a nod.
"So this is also goodbye, until..." Keira's voice trailed off. This could be the end. Then life would go back to normal. Guardian training until she was head guardian like her parents would've wanted her to be...then maybe she could retire and find a peaceful job that didn't involve hurting innocent creatures.
"Until the Insurrection," Kriagdor said, his tone breathy.
"I meant to ask you about that, but I guess there's no time."
Keira couldn't help but feel a little upset. All this and then nothing. She would never know what this Insurrection was about. The thought that she could be involved was crowded out by thoughts of the mission ahead and how much she didn't want to go back.
"You should come back Keira, you're special," Kriagdor said.
Keira understood that she could be different from her fellow gaurdians in training. None of her friends would ever be able to do this.
"Special?" Keira wanted to know what he meant.
Her heart started to pound again and she felt hot inside her hoodie.
"Keira." Kriagdor's eyes pierced hers and seemed to glow. A beautiful, calming fire.
"You are the chosen one."
Keira laughed. How ridiculous.
She didn't want to think about being anything of the sort at the moment. Keira brushed it aside and stood up quickly. She pulled Skydor by his arm so he could get up and follow her.
"Ready?" Keira looked back at Skydor, who had a puzzled look on his face.
Skydor could not understand why Keira had laughed. Being the chosen one was an honour, it was just the best thing that could happen to you. It made you royalty, important, different. Skydor had always thought it was between him and Chloriyen. Chloriyen, because of her green coat of fur and himself because he had always been the best at everything and was favored by the chief. He knew the chosen one was of pure human origin, but with what his world had become, everything could change in a second. This guardian girl laughing about it reminded him how foolish and blind guardians had been raised up to be. It was more reason for her not to be the chosen one.
