Chapter fifteen - Not entirely caught

Keira cleared her throat and froze. Waiting for someone to say something.

Her heart, instead of beating fast, seemed to slow down to a gentle ponder and she could hear herself breathing. Her diaphragm expanded and caved inward and she prepared herself for what was to come next.

"Take Xander away," a woman who had short black hair and golden brown skin called out.

Before Keira could panic, Xander was gone. She almost felt like something important was being taken away. They hadn't even planned what they would say. There hadn't been time to discuss it, well there had been a lot of time but neither of them had given a thought to that possibility. And usually the interrogation would be done with both parties sitting next to each other. At least, she thought so.

Keira followed the head guardians into the main lounge and sat down on the chair at the end of the room, opposite everyone else. She held her breath and waited for the woman to speak. She anticipated the scolding that was to come.

"Keira, first let me as this one question. Where were you?" The woman who had ordered Xander to be taken away spoke, her voice sent chills running down Keira's spine.

"I was with Xander, he wanted to show me something today. So we went on a short trip," Keira answered, and in her head she prayed that they wouldn't be able to tell that she was half lying.

"A short trip that lasted one and a half days?"

"We weren't gone that long, he--uhm he took me to his place and we stayed there before he showed me the something."

Keira could feel the blush creeping into her cheeks, she rubbed her left cheek with her palm, hoping that her cold hand would cool her burning face.

"You are aware that this type of behavior isn't allowed?" The woman spoke, her voice sounding far away.

"I know. But I begged him to take me there, I really wanted to see it," Keira's voice pleaded with the woman to believe her.

"What is it that he wanted to show you?" Mr Briggs asked, his mouth curling into a smile.

"My parents history in guardianship," Keira hoped it sounded convincing enough.

"Alright then, well you are going to have to face some sort of punishment for disappearing without notice and for having an unprofessional relationship with Xander," the woman spoke again.

Keira almost burst into laughter, she didn't think it would've been that easy to convince them but it seemed they were rushing I'm order to attend other matters.

"We will decide on a suitable punishment later."

Mr Briggs and the black haired lady walked out of the room, side by side.

Keira sighed and flopped onto the couch the head guardians had been sitting on. That had been too close for comfort. And a little too fast actually. There was probably something really important going on. One more strike, and she would definitely be out.

Keira pulled her arm from under her and fumbled with the chain necklace thing that Talieeyes had given her. Despite the heat and all the sweating she had been doing, it was cold to the touch. The iciness seemed to penetrate the part of her skin it had been placed against. It felt odd, but a good kind of odd. To Keira, cold was dark, and dark was evil. But each and everyday Keira had begun to discover how much good could come out of something that seemed evil.

Keira stood up to look at the necklace in the mirror. From where she was standing, it looked like it was glowing. It was the same size and shape as Miedesa's, only white with small gold particles floating inside the gem.
