Chapter thirty one - Armor

"Stop crying Keira, this isn't even the beginning." Skydor wiped Keira's tears away with his index finger.

"You're right," Keira half mumbled. She had to be strong if she was going to stop a whole army.

"So what then?"

"Well first, a way up and out of this hole."
Keira fumbled with the clespe stone around her neck and thought about it, but there wasn't much she could come up with. They may as well be dead.
As Keira was about to voice her thoughts, she felt the warm familiar glow from the clespe stone.

"What are the properties of this stone? Like, what can it do?"

"Heal, protect and it can be used as a tracker," Skydor answered. He moved closer to Keira and she felt her heart flutter.

"Can I touch it?" Skydor asked, he looked a little nervous and Keira didn't quite understand why.
"Well, why not?" Keira said, her eyebrows furrowed.

"I've heard that anyone who is not the owner of the stone can get seriously injured by it, some even just by looking at it."
"I think that's the answer I was looking for. Let's get out of here then, if the stone truly works the we should be safe right?" Keira shrugged.

"You can't put your trust in such a small thing Keira, we need a stronger plan."
"It half saved my life did it not? How do we know it doesn't have more power?"
Skydor raised his eyebrow, "How do we know it does?"

"Well there's only one way to find out-"

Skydor started to feel around the stone walls for something to grip on.
"It's like some sort of ladder, like this hole is here for a purpose." He climbed up the sculpted ladder and stopped a few centimeters from the edge, the wall was smooth and there was nothing to grip onto anymore.
"Can I come up?" Keira shout-whispered to Skydor.
He didn't reply, concentrating on a way to climb up and out of the hole.
Keira climbed up behind Skydor hesitantly then stopped and tried to see what he was doing in the darkness.
"Is it too far?" Keira asked.
Skydor's reply was interrupted by a screeching noise and the batting if wings.

"I don't know how we're going to do this but that stone better work" Skydor shouted over more screeches.
Keira looked up and almost lost her balance when she saw what was above them. There could have been more than ten of the ugly winged creatures flying about and screeching at them. She had never seen one up close, the creatures didn't even look like birds. Their wings were covered in scales and veins instead of feathers and their beaks were sharp and mechanical looking. The small eyes glowed an evil yellow and the talons coming out of the heavy bodies were brown and cracked with dirty claws jutting out of them.

"I'm going to climb out and pull you up okay? As soon as we're up we start running."

Keira nodded and climbed further up as Skydor tried to climb out. He reached for the edge and pulled himself up, using the ladder as something to push off of. When he had gotten out, Keira reached up to him and pushed herself up to make it easier for Skydor to pull her up.
All the while, the Vulturapters continued to fly and screech above them but not once did the birds lay a beak on the two figures. Keira ran, following Skydor and she didn't look back or look up to the creatures following them. The clespe stone on her necklace started to glow and it seemed to radiate a shield around them. They had taken a chance and it had worked. Keira made a mental note to learn about the stone and its power when she could. She had a feeling she would need it in the near future.
