Chapter thirteen - First Impressions

The spider-woman that had just introduced herself smiled as Keira sat on the bed. She waited for Keira to return the favor but Keira sat, silent and her mouth so wide open that her jaw threatened to reach her knees.

"When you're ready," the woman said.

Keira cleared her throat and spoke, "I'm.." She hesitated and licked her lips.

"I'm Keira.. It's nice, well a bit frightening to meet you."

The spider smiled and walked up to a bookshelf where she took a purple book out of its space and placed it on the table next to the bed. She blew the dust off the cover and opened the first page.

"What are you?" Miedesa asked.

Confused, Keira answered in a way that made most sense to her.

"I'm human?" she answered, almost questioning herself.

"I know that," Miedesa chuckled, "I mean what type of human?"

Keira opened her mouth to speak, but she couldn't think of anything to say.

"Okay let me help you. Guardian, peacemaker, sorcerer, wise woman, teacher, nurse, doctor, warrior, rebel?"

"Is that all I can be?" Keira thought aloud.

"Yes it is I'm afraid," Miedesa replied.

"What? Did you hear me? I'm sorry. I'm a- well I guess I'm a guardian, in training for it" Keira said.

"Oh." Miedesa suddenly stopped smiling and she bared her fangs, "Then what are you doing here? Guardians don't like to be around us, unless they are pretending to be innocent girls who spy on us and take information back to their regions."

Miedesa pushed Keira back and jabbed at her chest with her fingers. Keira felt a pang of hurt in her chest at Miedesa's words.

"Firstly, I wouldn't even know where your lair was if it hadn't been for Xander, secondly, why don't you ask a few more questions before assuming I'm a spy? What if I'm against guardianship and I'm trying to run away?" Keira almost shouted.

"Aww, how convincing. I'm sorry I don't believe you," Miedesa laughed as she faked her sympathy.

Keira got up to try and run to the door but the woman pushed her back and clamped her one arm onto the bed. Keira kicked Miedesa off and searched for the button Mediesa had pressed. She ran her fingers underneath the bed and jabbed at the first button she found. Relieved, Keira waited for her arm to be loosed but what came was a surprise to both Keira and Miedesa.

A thick woven spider web jumped out of the bed and smothered Miedesa. She fell over and hit the ground head first.

Keira, still panicked, pressed every single button until her arm was loose. She hopped off the bed and ran towards the door at the end of the long room. She grasped the handle to turn it, and was pushed back by a force from the other side. The door opened on its own and in walked Xander, with a small elvish-looking man beside him.

"How nice of you to join us," Keira said sarcastically.

Xander didn't catch it and replied with a smile on his face, "having fun?"

"Oh my precious!" The elf man hobbled towards Miedesa.

The elf took a knife from his side and started to cut Miedesa out of the web.
