Chapter thirty four - The real enemy
A blood curdling howl rang in Keira's ears. She heard Skydor shout and resisted the urge to rush to his aid. The thought of never seeing him again crippled her and it took every ounce of strength she had left to move in the opposite direction.
Keira increased her pace with every step until she was almost running. With no clue to which room she was looking for, she had to read the signs carefully. The compound was large, brick buildings shaped in a semi circle that served as a central point. Keira jogged past the different meeting rooms, the library, the therapy rooms and as she was about to reach the end of the semicircle's left arm, a large green icon on a metal door caught her attention. The icon was triangular, upside down and separated into curved lines with a small block at the tip of the triangle. Keira breathed a sigh of relief. She was glad she had found the room without any trouble. Keira pushed the door, and was surprised that it wasn't locked.
The pungent smell of blood and metal filled her nostrils, causing her heart rate to increase. If something bad been in the room before her, it could still be there; watching and waiting.
Keira tiptoed around the room, looking under every desk and behind the shelves to see if there was anything. Her once hunched shoulders relaxed when she found nothing. A man, who looked to be about fifty years old, lay with his head on a huge keyboard, with a pool of blood surrounding him. His lower body was mangled, and where his legs were supposed to be; an unsettling mess of intestines and organs.
Keira turned away quickly and picked up something that resembled a microphone. She looked for the switch and then flicked it.
"This is Keira, " her voice was raspy.
Keira cleared her throat and tried again.
" I am Keiraina-grehyonda Parkinson. I hope this thing works and you can all hear me, and you've stopped fighting each other, if only just for a second."
Skydor slowed down at the sound of Keira's voice. He closed his eyes and sighed, relieved that she had found the intercom room before he did. Skydor turned around and started to run in the opposite direction, he was sure that he wouldn't be the only one who would try to find her.
Oh how adorable, Velaador thought to himself. It had only been too easy concealing himself from the peacemaker girl. The one place she hadn't though to look was where he had been waiting. She had forgotten to close the door, and Velaador was right behind it. Velaador smiled to himself, and stood silently, giving her a few moments to attempt to save the day.
"Is this really the solution? Bloodshed and suffering? How long are we going to kill each other without reasoning?"
Velaador mimicked Keira and approached her petite form.
Skydor looked at the icons on the doors and tried to figure out what they meant. None of them made sense so he decided to go through each and every room until he found her. It was going to take time, but he didn't want to play guessing games, lest he run right past the room she was in.
"Think about the time when humans and ferliobogs lived together, in harmony. Something happened, and you we're separated. The enemy attacked, seperated you and forced you to live in fear of each other. The real enemy here i-"
Skydor paused. Had she been cut off? Was someone in there with her? Skydor didn't want to think of the worst so he continued his search; pushing doors and calling out for Keira.
Keira felt something rough grip her neck. She spluttered and brought her hands to her neck and tried to pull the thing off. The grip grew tighter. From what Keira felt, it was the tail of a maflakof. Slowly, she felt her body being lifted off the ground. The tail was now wrapped around her entire body and it brought her face to face with the man she had seen only a few hours ago.
