Chapter twenty six - Acceptance
"Peacemaker?"
Keira didn't want to believe that he meant her. Despite everything Skydor and Taurma had been saying it just was not possible. The product of two head guardians was supposed to be a guardian, not a Peacemaker. Maybe he was looking for something else and had mistaken Keira for whoever it was.Velaador lifted her chin with sharp claws that had appeared from nowhere.
"You cannot hide any longer. Me finding you was inevitable, all you did was delay it."Keira shook her head and struggled to bring her words out. Her chest ached terribly and she felt blood mixing with the saliva in her mouth as she tried to speak. Velaador laughed, right in her ear and he whispered to her, his tone light and comical.
"Oh darling. Don't tell me you didn't know? Surely that idiot Skydor told you that you are the chosen one?"
With a clenched jaw, Keira spoke slowly, trying as hard as she could to be strong.
"I am not the chosen one.""Oh shut up!" Velaador brought his hand to Keira's neck and lifted her," Do not try to fool me. I know a clespe stone when I see one. There are only a few people I've ever heard of that actually own one. And don't tell me that the necklace was a gift from your pathetic human boyfriend."
Keira gripped his hands and tried to pull them away from her neck. He put more pressure until Keira was sure she would faint. As the pressure increased, so did Keira's light headedness. The necklace Talieyes had given Keira felt warm against her chest. It felt like a cloud of sunlight and life that was seeping into her skin slowly. The smell of sweat and blood filled Keira's nostrils, it was sickening but it reminded her that she was still alive and she could still fight.
The small feeling or object -she didn't know exactly what it was- that was now inside her grew bigger until she felt its pressure shoot through her arms and her legs.
The surge of power was so powerful that when Keira arched backwards, Velaador froze, trembled for a moment and then sunk down in front of Keira. He writhed on the floor and groaned as the flesh on his skin turned to a coat of dark blue fur and a snakes tail morphed out of what had -a second ago- been a wolf's tail. As he transformed, he hissed at Keira and crawled slowly toward her. His hairy arms were still human arms but the muscular legs underneath his pants had now turned into the hind legs of an animal. A fiery symbol drew itself on his chest and he stood up with a mighty roar and lunged towards Keira.
Keira, who was now feeling stronger and filled with adrenalin stopped him with her elbow. She spun around and jumped over the cowering wolf-thing Velaador had turned into and she reached for the door. She pulled down the handle and opened the door, sprinting out of the house as fast as she could.
If she was going to fight this thing, there should be no evidence. If anyone found out the head guardians would have a definite reason to belive that she had something to do with all the attacks. Her short legs moved swiftly and carried her away from the student compound and towards the only place she knew would be safe. Keira knew that there was no chance she could get there without a struggle but she continued to run towards the Ferlioboa forest, dodging fenced buildings as she did.
The sound of growling and snarling kept her running for dear life. A new energy and alertness had come over her once tired body.
Keira ran straight through the burnt ferliobog compound. Her shoes crunched and smoke rose in short wafts as she stepped on the charred grass.
Velaador continued to followed her until she had jumped over the broken fence and past the weird tree trunk that had bite marks in it. A trail of limp bodies distracted Keira for a few minutes. The men she had saved from Skydor lay on their backs and stomachs in a disturbing line. They're white lab coats had taken the colour of bloody dirt and guts. Their glazed over eyes stared out into the distance, calling for help or something that may have saved them. Keira didn't want even imagine how it had happened. What were the men coming back for if they knew the area was dangerous?
