The Gilmore household was unusually quiet, a stark contrast to its usual lively and chaotic atmosphere. Mid-year exams were approaching, and both Rory and Alessia were deep in study mode. The twins sat at the large oak dining table, surrounded by stacks of textbooks, notes, and colorful highlighters, each lost in their world of academia.
Alessia sat with a scowl, her focus more on the tension between her and Rory than on her notes. Ever since she found out that Rory had kissed Jess, she couldn't shake off her anger and betrayal. The tension between the twins was palpable, and Alessia's frustration seeped into every aspect of her study session.
"Alessia, are you okay?" Rory asked, glancing up from her biology textbook, but receiving only a cold stare in response.
Alessia didn't even look up from her notes. "Oh, I'm just peachy," she said sarcastically. "Just trying to figure out how to process the fact that my sister, who apparently has no boundaries, kissed my boyfriend."
Rory winced, clearly hurt by Alessia's words. "Alessia, I—"
"Save it," Alessia interrupted, her voice edged with anger. "I don't really want to hear your excuses right now."
The air was thick with tension as Rory tried to maintain her focus on her studies, but the emotional weight was heavy. Their mother, Lorelai, had different ideas about how they should be spending their time.
"Rory, sweetheart!" Lorelai's voice floated up the stairs. "Come on, take a break. Let's go get some ice cream."
Rory sighed, not even looking up from her notes. "Mom, I really need to study. These exams are important."
"Always studying," Lorelai complained, appearing at Rory's doorway. "Just a quick trip. It'll be fun!"
"Mom, I can't," Rory insisted. "Maybe after the exams."
Lorelai pouted, her gaze shifting to Alessia, who was pointedly ignoring her. "Alessia, come on! It'll be a nice break from all this studying. Let's go get some ice cream."
Alessia's eyes flicked up, meeting Lorelai's with a cool, dismissive look. "I'm good. I've got too much to do, and I'd rather not spend it pretending like everything's normal."
Lorelai's face fell slightly, but she didn't push further. "Alright, but don't say I didn't offer. You both need to take breaks now and then."
Once Lorelai left, Alessia let out a long, frustrated sigh. She continued to study, her anger simmering just beneath the surface. Rory, feeling the weight of Alessia's silence, tried to break it.
"Alessia, can we talk about this?" Rory asked, her voice soft but pleading.
Alessia shot her a sharp glance. "About what? How you betrayed me? I think I'm good."
Rory's shoulders slumped. "I know I messed up. But can't we at least try to work through this? We're about to have a ton of exams, and we need to focus."
"Right," Alessia said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Because nothing says 'focus' like your lack of respect for my relationship."
Rory opened her mouth to respond but was cut off by Alessia's dismissive wave. "Save it. I need to finish this," Alessia snapped, turning her attention back to her notes.
The house fell into an uneasy silence. Alessia's mind raced with equations and historical dates, but the underlying resentment and hurt from Rory's actions made it hard to concentrate. Her anger was consuming, and despite her best efforts, it was impossible to completely shut out her feelings.
At one point, she glanced at her phone to see a message from a classmate asking about a particularly tricky calculus problem. Alessia responded quickly, grateful for the distraction, and then dove back into her studies.
The hours blurred together until, finally, exhaustion began to take its toll. Alessia rubbed her eyes, her head throbbing from the strain. She glanced at the clock: 2 AM. She needed sleep, but her mind was still racing with equations and historical dates.
Taking a deep breath, she decided to call it a night. She gathered her books and papers into a neat pile and climbed into bed, her thoughts still whirling. Tomorrow would be another day of intense studying, but she was determined to push through. For her future, for her dreams.
As she drifted off to sleep, Alessia couldn't shake the feeling of betrayal. Her twin's actions had hurt deeply, and the resentment lingered. But she vowed to herself that she would prove everyone wrong. She would make it, with or without Rory's support.
And with that final, defiant thought, Alessia finally succumbed to the pull of sleep, her dreams a tangled web of stress, hope, and determination.
