Alessia woke up to the dull ache of last night's emotions and the unfamiliar comfort of Jess's bed. She stretched, feeling the fabric of his shirt against her skin. It was soft, and the scent of Jess still lingered on it. She glanced over to see Jess already dressed, reading a book by the window.
"Morning," he said, looking up. "How are you feeling?"
"Like I was hit by a truck," Alessia groaned, rubbing her temples. "But I'll live."
"Here," Jess said, tossing her a pair of his sweatpants. "These will go better with the shirt."
Alessia caught them and smiled. "Thanks. I'm borrowing more of your wardrobe, it seems."
Jess chuckled. "My closet is your closet. Now, let's get downstairs before Luke starts yelling."
They headed downstairs to the diner. The familiar clatter of dishes and the smell of freshly brewed coffee greeted them. Luke looked up from behind the counter, raising an eyebrow at Alessia's outfit.
"Rough night?" he asked, pouring a cup of coffee and handing it to her.
"You have no idea," Alessia replied, taking a grateful sip. The warmth and caffeine began to work their magic, slowly pulling her out of her cranky fog.
Luke grabbed a muffin from the counter and handed it to her. "Eat something. It'll help."
She nodded, taking a bite. "Thanks, Luke. You're a lifesaver."
"Just don't make a habit of it," Luke grumbled, though there was a hint of a smile on his face. "You're like a second daughter to me, but even I have my limits."
Alessia grinned, her spirits lifting. "Wouldn't dream of it. Besides, I don't think my liver could handle it."
Luke chuckled, shaking his head. "Just make sure you get to school on time."
They finished their breakfast and made their way to school. The cool morning air helped clear Alessia's head, though she still felt the lingering effects of the previous night. They walked in comfortable silence, the familiarity of the routine grounding her.
At school, they spotted Isabella by the lockers, her blonde hair catching the morning light. She waved them over, a cheerful smile on her face.
"Hey, guys! How was your night?" Isabella asked, her eyes twinkling with curiosity.
Alessia exchanged a glance with Jess. "Eventful," she said with a smirk. "What about you?"
"Oh, you know, the usual. Homework, TV, trying to avoid my brother's terrible music," Isabella replied, rolling her eyes.
They chatted for a while, the easy banter lifting Alessia's spirits. As they made their way to class, the announcement of an ice hockey game later that evening caught their attention.
"You guys want to go?" Isabella asked, her excitement evident. "I heard our team has a good chance of winning this one."
"Sure, why not?" Alessia said, looking at Jess.
He shrugged. "Yeah, sounds good."
The school day passed quickly, and soon they were heading to the ice rink. The stands were filled with students and parents, the atmosphere buzzing with anticipation. Alessia, Jess, and Isabella found seats near the front, the cold air from the rink making Alessia grateful for Jess's oversized shirt.
The game was intense, with the crowd cheering and groaning at every play. Alessia found herself getting caught up in the excitement, her earlier crankiness forgotten. During a break in the game, she noticed a guy on the rink who caught her attention. He had dark hair and intense eyes, moving with a fluid grace that made him stand out.
"Who's that?" Alessia asked, nodding towards him.
Isabella leaned forward to get a better look. "Oh, that's Beau. He's on the hockey team. Just transferred here this semester."
Jess glanced at Beau, his expression unreadable. "Seems like he fits in already."
As the game resumed, Beau's skills on the ice became even more evident. He maneuvered with precision, his focus unwavering. Alessia couldn't help but admire his talent, feeling a sense of kinship. When the game ended with their team winning, the crowd erupted in cheers.
As they made their way out of the rink, Beau approached them, still in his gear, a friendly smile on his face. "Hey, did you guys enjoy the game?"
"Yeah, you were amazing out there!" Isabella said enthusiastically.
"Thanks," Beau replied, his eyes meeting Alessia's. "I'm Beau, by the way."
"Alessia," she said, shaking his hand. "This is Jess and Isabella."
Jess gave a curt nod, while Isabella greeted Beau warmly. Alessia could sense Jess's protective side kicking in, but she appreciated his presence beside her.
As they walked back to their cars, Beau fell into step with them, chatting easily with Isabella. Alessia found herself smiling at his easygoing nature, feeling that they would become good friends quickly. Jess remained quiet, his protective side evident, but Alessia appreciated his presence beside her.
That night, as she lay in bed, Alessia thought about the day's events. Despite the rough start, it had turned out to be a good day. She felt a sense of hope, knowing that with friends like Jess, Isabella, and maybe even Beau, she could handle whatever life threw her way.
