Alessia sat cross-legged on Jess's bed, her thoughts a whirlpool of confusion and hurt. The apartment was quiet, the only sounds the occasional clink of dishes from the diner below and the rustling of pages as Jess read a book beside her. The comfort of the routine provided a fragile anchor, but it couldn't keep her mind from wandering back to her mother.
"It's been three days," Alessia said suddenly, breaking the silence.
Jess looked up from his book, his expression concerned. "Three days since what?"
"Since the fight with my mom," Alessia replied, her voice tinged with frustration. "She hasn't even tried to contact me. Not a call, not a text. Nothing."
Jess closed his book and set it aside, a frown crossing his face. "Maybe she's waiting for you to make the first move."
Alessia sighed, running a hand through her hair. "I just don't get it. I know we fight, but this... it feels different. Like she's really given up on me."
Jess shifted closer, his presence a comforting weight. "You know how she is. Stubborn as a mule and twice as proud. She should be the one reaching out, not you."
"Maybe she just doesn't care," Alessia muttered, staring at the wall.
"Don't let her off the hook that easily," Jess said firmly. "She should be fighting to fix things, not just sitting back and waiting for you to come crawling back."
Alessia's eyes filled with tears she refused to let fall. "Then why hasn't she called? Why is Rory always the one who gets the attention? The understanding?"
"Because she's messed up," Jess replied bluntly. "And it's not your job to fix her or figure out why. She should be treating you better, plain and simple."
Alessia squeezed his hand, grateful for his support. "Thanks, Jess. I just... I don't know if I should go back home. Part of me wants to, but another part is so angry. I don't know if I can face her."
Jess nodded, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. "You need to do what's right for you. If you need more time, take it. If you want to go back and talk to her, do that. But don't force yourself to make a decision right now."
"I wish it were that simple," Alessia said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I hate feeling like I'm running away, but I don't know if I can handle another argument."
"You don't have to decide anything tonight," Jess said gently. "Take it one step at a time."
Alessia sighed, leaning into him. "Thanks for being here, Jess. I don't know what I'd do without you."
He wrapped an arm around her, holding her close. "You'll figure it out. And I'll be here, no matter what."
They sat in silence for a while, the weight of the decision looming over them. Alessia felt the pull of home, but also the fear of facing her mother. She knew she couldn't avoid it forever, but for now, she was grateful for Jess and the safe haven he provided.
