Riley slipped into Beau's dorm, immediately catching sight of Beau already half-focused on Mario Kart, his eyes fixed on the screen as he zoomed around a track. Riley kicked off his shoes and tossed his jacket onto a nearby chair, making his way over to the couch.
"You started without me?" Riley teased, grabbing the second controller from the coffee table.
Beau grinned, still focused on the game. "Had to. I can't have you showing up thinking you're good at this."
Riley let out a playful scoff, sinking into the couch beside him. "Oh, you're in for it."
"Please. I'm just saving you from yourself at this point." Beau's character shot ahead with a speed boost, leaving Riley's far behind.
As soon as the race restarted, Riley pressed down hard on the controller. "You're gonna regret that. Watch this."
"Uh-huh, sure," Beau said, landing a perfect green shell on Riley's kart just as he was about to take the lead. "How's that taste?"
"You're playing dirty," Riley said, laughing as he shot off a red shell of his own. Beau's character spun off the track. "Karma, baby."
Beau groaned dramatically, throwing his head back. "Nooo! Cheap shot!"
Riley leaned into his advantage, focused, with a hint of a grin. "Not so easy when you're not playing against the best, huh?"
"Okay, okay. I see how it is," Beau muttered, his fingers flying across the buttons, trying to regain lost ground. "This is war now."
"War?" Riley's kart hit a banana peel, spinning wildly. "Who left that there?"
"That would be me," Beau smirked, taking the lead again. "I told you, I came prepared."
Riley nudged Beau playfully with his elbow. "Don't get too cocky, I'm just warming up."
They kept going, racing each other through the next few tracks, laughing and shouting as the competition heated up. Every win, every loss, came with a stream of playful insults.
"You're actually trash at this," Beau teased as he overtook Riley again, the finish line in sight.
Riley narrowed his eyes, focused. "You've got one lap left. Don't get too comfortable."
Beau hit another speed boost, inches away from winning. "Comfortable? I'm cruising."
Riley's character suddenly fired off a lightning bolt, shrinking Beau's kart. Riley overtook him just before the final stretch, crossing the finish line first. He threw his arms up in mock triumph.
"Oh, what's that? Victory's never tasted sweeter."
Beau shook his head, half-annoyed but grinning. "You got lucky. I'm not even trying."
"Uh-huh, sure," Riley teased, tossing his controller onto the couch. "Call it whatever helps you sleep at night."
Beau stood, stretching his arms above his head. "Alright, Mario Kart champ, I think we need to refuel. Pizza?"
