Alessia Gilmore woke up to the smell of coffee wafting through the house. She stretched and yawned, glancing at the clock. It was 6:30 AM on Friday, but unlike Rory, who had to catch the bus to Chilton, Stars Hollow High had a teacher training day. No school for Alessia.
She slipped out of bed and made her way downstairs, the aroma of coffee growing stronger. In the kitchen, she found Lorelai bustling around, pouring coffee and packing Rory's lunch.
"Morning," Alessia greeted, stifling another yawn.
Lorelai turned, her face lighting up with a smile. "Morning, sleepyhead! No school today, huh? Lucky you."
Rory entered the kitchen, looking impeccably put together as always. "Hey, Alessia. Enjoy your day off."
Alessia nodded, though she couldn't help but feel a twinge of being left out. Rory and Lorelai had their morning routine, their banter, and their plans. It always seemed like they had a special connection that she was on the periphery of.
"What's on your agenda today?" Lorelai asked, not waiting for an answer before turning back to Rory. "Ready for the big test?"
Rory nodded, grabbing her backpack. "Yep, all set. Wish me luck!"
"Good luck," Lorelai and Alessia said in unison, though Lorelai's attention was already back on Rory.
As they headed out the door, Lorelai gave Alessia a quick wave. "See you later, Alessia. Don't get into too much trouble!"
"Yeah, yeah," Alessia muttered to herself as the door closed behind them. She sighed and poured herself a cup of coffee, savoring the solitude of the empty house.
After a leisurely breakfast and a couple of hours of reading and relaxing, Alessia decided it was time to meet up with Isabella. She sent her a quick text, and they agreed to meet at Luke's Diner. Alessia grabbed her jacket and headed out the door, almost bumping into Babette as she stepped onto the porch.
"Well, hey there, Alessia!" Babette chirped, her voice loud enough to wake the whole neighborhood. "What are you up to today, sweetie?"
"Hey, Babette. Just meeting a friend at Luke's," Alessia replied, smiling. Babette's nosiness was endearing in a way, even if she could be a bit much this early in the morning.
"Luke's, huh? Good choice. You give that grumpy old bear my love," Babette said with a wink.
"I will," Alessia promised, chuckling as she walked down the steps and onto the sidewalk. Stars Hollow was already buzzing with its usual quirky charm, and Alessia felt a bit lighter as she made her way to the diner.
Upon arriving at Luke's, she found Isabella waiting at a corner booth, a mischievous grin on her face. "Hey, Alessia! Ready to make the most of our day off?"
"Absolutely," Alessia said, sliding into the booth. "So, what's the latest gossip?"
Isabella leaned in, eyes gleaming. "Oh, you wouldn't believe it. Miss Patty caught Kirk trying to sing karaoke at the dance studio last night. Said he was rehearsing for a talent show."
Alessia laughed, shaking her head. "Kirk and his antics. Never a dull moment in this town."
They chatted and laughed, enjoying their breakfast. Luke wandered over to their table, eyeing Alessia's coffee cup.
"Another refill?" he asked, though his tone suggested he disapproved.
"Please," Alessia replied, holding out her cup.
Luke poured the coffee, then muttered, "You know, all that coffee is going to make you die young."
Alessia smirked, taking a sip. Her face instantly soured. "Luke, this is decaf."
Luke grumbled, crossing his arms. "Thought I'd try to save you from an early grave."
"I'll take my chances," Alessia said firmly, pushing the cup back towards him. "Real coffee, please."
Luke shook his head, grumbling as he walked away to get her a proper refill. "Kids these days..."
As they continued their meal, Alessia felt a sense of camaraderie with Isabella that she often missed at home. They talked about everything and nothing, their conversation punctuated by fits of laughter and the occasional interruption from the diner's other patrons.
"So, any plans for the rest of the day?" Isabella asked, leaning back in her seat.
Alessia sighed, stirring her coffee. "Unfortunately, I've got Friday night dinner at my grandparents' place tonight. You know how fun that is."
Isabella winced sympathetically. "Yikes. Emily and Richard's high expectations, huh?"
"Yeah, and endless comparisons to Rory," Alessia said, rolling her eyes. "But, it's mandatory, so what can you do?"
"Well, at least we have the rest of the day to ourselves," Isabella said brightly. "What do you want to do?"
Alessia thought for a moment, then grinned. "How about we explore the town, maybe find some trouble to get into?"
"Sounds perfect," Isabella agreed.
After finishing breakfast, they decided to wander around town, enjoying the freedom of a school-free day. Alessia couldn't shake the feeling of being an outsider at home, but with Isabella by her side, she felt a little more grounded. As they strolled through Stars Hollow, the day stretched out before them, full of possibilities.
