Alessia Gilmore lounged in the cozy living room of the Gilmore house, idly flipping through a magazine as the chatter of Lorelai and Rory filled the air. They were animatedly discussing an upcoming Harvard alumni event they were attending over the weekend, their excitement contagious.
"You're going to knock their socks off, Rory," Lorelai exclaimed, her eyes shining with pride.
Rory grinned, her cheeks flushing with pleasure. "Thanks, Mom. I hope so."
Alessia couldn't help but feel a pang of envy. While she was genuinely happy for Rory, the contrast between their relationships with Lorelai was palpable. Rory always seemed to be the center of attention, the golden child with the bright future, while Alessia often felt like an afterthought.
"Mm, hey Mom," Alessia spoke up, trying to interject herself into the conversation. "I was thinking of checking out that new bookstore in town this weekend. Maybe we could go together?"
Lorelai's attention briefly flickered towards Alessia before returning to Rory. "That sounds nice, sweetie. But this weekend is all about Harvard. Maybe another time?"
Alessia nodded, a small smile masking her disappointment. "Sure, another time."
The next day at school, Isabella immediately sensed Alessia's subdued mood. "Hey, what's up? You look like you could use a pick-me-up."
Alessia forced a smile, appreciating her friend's concern. "Just dealing with the usual family dynamics. Rory and Mom are off to another exciting event, and I'm left to my own entertainment."
Isabella shook her head sympathetically. "That sucks, Alessia. You know I'm always here for you."
"Thanks, Bella. I might take you up on that," Alessia replied gratefully, leaning against her locker.
The school day passed in a blur of classes and assignments, Alessia's thoughts never straying far from the feeling of being overlooked at home. By the time the final bell rang, she felt a mix of exhaustion and restless energy, the same feeling that had driven her to Luke's Diner the previous day.
Deciding to stop by the diner again, Alessia pushed open the familiar door. The bell chimed lightly, announcing her arrival. Luke was behind the counter, already pouring her a cup of coffee without needing to be asked.
"Hey, Luke," Alessia greeted with a small smile, sliding onto a stool at the counter.
"Alessia," Luke replied with a nod, his gaze steady. "Another tough day?"
"You could say that," she admitted, taking a grateful sip of her coffee.
Luke leaned against the counter, eyeing her over the rim of his own coffee mug. "You know, all that coffee is going to make you die young."
Alessia chuckled softly, shaking her head. "I'll take my chances. Besides, it's probably safer than navigating high school without caffeine."
Luke smirked, a hint of amusement in his eyes. "Fair point. Just don't come crying to me when you can't sleep."
