Alessia Gilmore and Beau were sprawled out on the living room floor, surrounded by a sea of snacks and soda cans. The TV was on, playing an old movie that neither of them was really paying attention to. Instead, they were caught up in their own conversation, the easy banter flowing effortlessly between them.
Alessia tossed a handful of popcorn at Beau, laughing as a few kernels bounced off his head. "You're terrible at catching, you know that?"
Beau rolled his eyes and flicked a piece of popcorn back at her. "You're just a bad shot."
"Excuses, excuses," Alessia teased, shoving another handful of popcorn into her mouth.
Beau grinned. "If my hands weren't full, I'd catch everything you threw at me."
"Sure you would," Alessia said, leaning her head back against the couch. "You're full of it, Beau."
He didn't respond right away, instead reaching for a soda can and taking a long sip before looking at her. "You know, it's kinda nice just hanging out like this. No big plans, no pressure. Just us."
Alessia smiled, nodding in agreement. "Yeah, it is. It feels...normal. Like we're just two people with no worries."
"Well, except for your terrible aim," Beau added with a smirk.
They lapsed into a comfortable silence, the kind that only happens between people who know each other well enough not to need to fill every moment with words. Alessia glanced over at Beau, noticing how relaxed he looked, and realized how much she valued moments like this. Moments where they didn't have to be anything other than themselves.
After a while, Beau shifted and looked at her, a playful gleam in his eyes. "So, you got any plans for Senior Prank Day? Or are you gonna play it safe?"
Alessia chuckled, rolling her eyes. "Please, I was born for Senior Prank Day. I've got a few ideas up my sleeve."
"Oh, really? Like what?" Beau leaned in, clearly intrigued.
Alessia pretended to zip her lips. "You'll just have to wait and see."
"Come on, give me a hint," Beau coaxed, nudging her with his shoulder.
"Not a chance," Alessia replied, grinning. "But let's just say the school's going to be talking about it for years."
Beau laughed. "That's what I like to hear. I'm in, whatever it is. We've got to make this one count."
"For sure," Alessia agreed. "No half-measures. It's our last chance to leave a mark."
"Exactly," Beau said, a mischievous twinkle in his eye. "We'll go down in history as the greatest pranksters to ever walk those halls."
Alessia smirked, enjoying the thought. "Can't wait."
Their conversation flowed easily from there, shifting from prank ideas to their favorite movies, and eventually to the music playing softly in the background. They shared stories, joked around, and just enjoyed each other's company, never once feeling the need to address the kiss they'd shared a few nights before. It wasn't that they were avoiding it; it just didn't seem necessary to talk about. They were still them—comfortable, close, and completely in sync.
After a while, the lull of the music and the coziness of the room made Alessia shift positions. She stretched out, laying her head on Beau's lap as she got comfortable for the movie. Beau didn't say anything, just reached for the remote and started scrolling through the options, his fingers brushing gently through her hair as he did.
"You want to watch another movie?" Beau asked, breaking the comfortable silence.
"Only if it's something ridiculous. I'm in the mood for a bad horror movie," Alessia replied, her voice muffled slightly by the cushion beneath her.
Beau grinned, sensing her playfulness. "Your wish is my command."
He settled on a cheesy, low-budget horror flick, the kind that was more likely to make them laugh than scare them. As the opening credits rolled, Beau glanced down at Alessia, who was already getting lost in the absurdity of the film. She was comfortable, content, and so was he. No awkwardness, no need to address anything—just two best friends enjoying the moment.
As the movie played on, the two of them laughed at the terrible dialogue and ridiculous special effects, making sarcastic comments and cracking jokes. Alessia occasionally poked fun at Beau's reactions, while he pretended to be horrified by the most absurd scenes.
Despite the silliness of the movie, there was a deeper sense of connection between them, one that didn't need to be spoken aloud. The kiss they'd shared was just another layer to their friendship, something that didn't need to be defined or dissected. It was there, in the background, but it didn't change who they were to each other.
By the time the credits rolled, they were both grinning, still riding the high of their shared laughter. Beau reached for the remote to turn off the TV, and Alessia slowly sat up, stretching her arms above her head.
"Okay, that was ridiculous," Alessia said, a satisfied smile on her face.
"Exactly what we needed," Beau agreed.
They both leaned back against the couch, the comfortable silence returning as they relaxed into the evening. No matter what tomorrow brought, they knew they had this—these moments of unspoken understanding and easy companionship. And for now, that was enough.
