Alessia sat cross-legged on her bed, surrounded by a chaotic mix of clothes, books, and memories. The walls of their dorm, which had once felt so new and expansive, now seemed to close in around her, filled with echoes of laughter, late-night talks, and the comfort of shared silence. Freshman year was ending, and with it came the bittersweet feeling of leaving behind everything they had built together.
"Al, can you hand me that box?" Riley called from the floor, where he was stuffing a pair of sneakers into a cardboard box labeled "keep".His hair was tousled, and he wore an oversized sweatshirt that had seen better days, a testament to their many cozy nights spent huddled under blankets.
"Sure thing," Alessia replied, reaching for the box beside her bed. She paused, looking at the mess around them. "I can't believe we're done with our first year. It feels like just yesterday we were lost freshmen trying to figure out where the dining hall was."
"Speak for yourself! I still don't know where half the buildings are," Riley shot back with a grin, tossing a crumpled shirt into the box.
As she handed him the box, the door swung open, and Beau stepped in, his presence immediately bringing a warmth that filled the room. He had a smile on his face that radiated joy, as if he were about to share some exciting news.
"Guess what?" Beau said, bouncing on his heels. "Riley and I got us some summer plans!"
Alessia raised an eyebrow, curiosity piqued. "What are you two scheming?"
"We're heading up to Maine for a week," Riley interjected, his excitement palpable. "We found a cabin that's cheap enough. Just the two of us—and now you too, if you want!"
Alessia's heart swelled at the thought of their little trio spending time together, free from the pressures of school. "That sounds amazing! I'd love to join!"
Beau's smile widened. "Perfect! It'll be a chance for all of us to unwind. Plus, I hear the lobster rolls are to die for."
"Count me in!" Alessia laughed, her earlier anxiety about leaving fading into anticipation for summer adventures.
As they continued packing, Alessia felt her phone buzz on the bed. Glancing at the screen, she saw a text from Logan, and her heart skipped a beat. She opened the message, her cheeks flushing as she read:
Logan: Hey Harvard, congrats on getting through your first year! You've grown a lot, and I'm excited to see what you'll achieve next year. Distance or not, you know I'll always be by your side. Have a great summer, and let's plan something soon.
A smile spread across her face, and she quickly typed back:
Alessia: Thanks, Logan! I can't believe we made it through! I can't wait to see you. Let's plan something fun for the summer. Miss you.
Riley caught her smile and raised an eyebrow. "Who's making you smile like that?"
"Just Logan being sweet," she said, her heart fluttering at the thought of him.
"Sweet? More like swoon-worthy," Beau teased, nudging her playfully. "You guys are adorable together."
"Adorable? Don't you mean insufferable?" Riley quipped, rolling his eyes dramatically. "Next, she'll be sending him love notes and heart emojis, and I'll be forced to witness it all."
Alessia felt a surge of warmth at their encouragement, fighting back a grin. "I guess. I just really like having him in my life."
"Good," Beau said, leaning back against the wall with his easygoing charm, a smile playing on his lips. "You deserve someone who thinks you're amazing. And he does—just look at that text!"
Alessia felt a surge of warmth at their encouragement. "Thanks, guys. I'm just grateful for all of you. You've made this year unforgettable."
As they finished packing, the excitement of their future adventures filled the air, making it clear that whatever awaited them, they would face it together. Freshman year had come to a close, but their story was just beginning.
"Okay, we've got to take a group picture before we leave this place," Beau declared suddenly, grabbing his phone.
"Good idea!" Alessia agreed, pulling Riley into a side hug. They all huddled close, the phone angled just right, their faces bright with laughter and joy.
"Say 'future!'" Beau called out, and they all shouted it together, the word echoing with promise and possibility.
As the camera clicked, Alessia felt a wave of emotion wash over her. It wasn't just the end of a year; it was the beginning of something new—a bond that would only deepen, no matter where life took them.
When the photo was taken and the laughter subsided, they all settled back into a comfortable silence. Alessia looked around at her friends, at the love and happiness radiating from Beau and Riley, and the way Logan's text made her heart swell with affection.
"This has been the best year," she said softly, her heart full.
"Here's to many more," Beau added, raising an imaginary toast, and they all echoed his sentiment.
As they continued packing, the anticipation of their summer adventures and the promise of new memories filled the air, making it clear that whatever awaited them, they would face it together.
