Police officers, ambulances, and news cameras flood a suburban neighborhood. Mackenzie "Kenzie" Patterson and Patrick Jane approach a cop outside of a mansion, and Teresa Lisbon follows behind them. A young girl was murdered.

"Captain," greeted Teresa.

"Agent Lisbon. Patterson. Don't think we'll be needing you guys. We like the neighborhood kid who found the body," greeted the captain.

"Did he confess?" asked Kenzie.

"Eh, he's a real squirrel. I'd say..."

Kenzie was confused. One: she didn't understand what the saying meant. So, she assumed it was another saying for white people. Two: it sounded like they were going with the kid because he looks like the stereotypical emo kid who could kill someone.

As Kenzie stays with Teresa, gunshots can be heard from inside the house. Kenzie, Teresa, and a group of officers rush into the house to find Patrick raising his hands in the air and the mother of the victim, Juniper.

"Honestly, it's not as bad as it looks," said Patrick.

Kenzie narrows her eyes at him, sees Juniper drop the gun, and walks out into the garden. She shakes her head at him before following Juniper.

"Mrs. Tolliver. Mrs. Tolliver! Please wait. Ma'am."

TWO WEEKS LATER:

Kenzie, Teresa, and their team walk through Palm Springs International Airport. Their team consisted of Agent Wayne Rigsby, Kimball Cho, and the rookie Grace Van Pelt. They're walking along the concourse. Van Pelt stops at the baggage carousels, causing the team to stare at her.

"Sorry..." says Van Pelt.

"You checked luggage? What, are you on vacation," asked Teresa. Kenzie sighs.

"No, ma'am. Won't do it again."

"When your trousseau arrives, pick up the second rental and go directly to the Sheriff's department. Hustle us up a couple of rooms, furniture, and phone lines."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Come on. Let's go," says Teresa, motioning to the rest of the team. As they walk away, Kenzie leans into Teresa's ear.

"Cool it down a bit," whispers Kenzie. Teresa brushes her off.

At the Riverside County Morgue, the team walks up a path when a taxi pulls up. Patrick comes out, greeting them. The girls sigh.

"Morning everybody. How was your flight," asks Patrick.

"Go away. You're on suspension," says Teresa.

Patrick catches up, putting himself between the women.

"Mandated leave," explains Patrick. "Hi, Kenzie."

"Patrick, you're not supposed here," says Kenzie with her eyebrows raised.

"It ends next week."

"So come back next week."

"Hot enough for you?"

Teresa looks at Kenzie.

"Did you tell him?"

Kenzie lets out an offended yelp, "No."

"Which one of you jackasses told you? It was you, wasn't it, Cho?"

"Yes, it was," admitted Cho.

Kenzie laughs.

"Of course, he called me. It's Red John. You can't keep me out of this. Why would you want to," says Patrick.
