A younger Kenzie quietly sat at her desk, working on some paperwork. She's still her fiery self. It's just that she's a little naive when it comes to using the system to her advantage and wants to be on good terms with her boss.

She looked up to see a younger Rigsby with that stupid goatee walking up to her. "Hey. He says his name's Patrick Jane."

"Patrick Jane? Really?"

"Red John, right? Wife and daughter? About a year ago?"

"Yeah, he's been off the radar. Sac PD lost track of him six months ago. I've never met him. Did he say why he came in?"

"Just that he wants to talk to you."

A younger Cho and Teresa, with a short bob, walked in. "Boss, Nevada County Sheriff's office called. They got a body. Country road near Malakoff Diggins."

Kenzie turned to Teresa. "Hey. Why don't you guys check it out? I'll catch up."

She walked back into the lobby, where a younger, disheveled Patrick Jane, stood. She went up to him with a polite smile. "Mr. Jane. I'm Agent Mackenzie Patterson. You wanted to talk to me?"

"Hi," said Patrick with a lowered voice.

"Hi."

"Um... Detective Elliott said that you're in charge of the... the Red John investigation?"

"Yeah. We took the case over from Sac PD in May."

"What's happening with the investigation?"

"That's a... big question, and we're kind of busy. We have another case. But, you could come back another time?"

"Yeah, well, I can wait. I-I-I'll wait."

"We don't have a waiting area."

"I could just sit right there."

"I-It's really not policy. But you can call. Make an appointment. We'll talk as soon as possible. But I have to go right now."

"Yeah, no problem. I-I just gonna wait outside, and, uh..."

Kenzie sadly sighed. "Mr. Jane..."

"No, it's okay. It's a nice day. I'll take a walk." He turned around. "And, um, if I come back in three hours, will that be okay?"

"Yeah."

"Thank you."

Kenzie turned to Steve, one of her team members. "Hey, Steve?"

"Yeah," Steve replied.

"Can you help Mr. Jane find his way out of the building?"

Kenzie glared at Steve's annoyed exhale. "Sure." She turned around into her office to grab her keys. She walked back to the front of the elevators to see Steve punch Patrick in the face. Her eyes grew wide as she raced over there.

"What the hell are you doing, Hannigan?!"

"Boss..." he muttered.

"I told you to take him downstairs, not beat him up!"

"Sorry, okay? I'm sorry. I-I lost it."

"My fault," said Patrick. "My fault entirely. I provoked you. I'm sorry."

"That's no excuse. Jesus, Hannigan, get him some ice."

Kenzie helped him off the ground. She tilted her head to look at his bleeding nose and sighed.

"I'm okay. I'm okay. Seriously, it–it's not his fault. I-I deserved it, okay?"

"No. He's supposed to act professional. At all times." She started to guide him to her office. "Come on."
