Kenzie walked up to Patrick's loft only to find the door wide open. She cautiously walked in.
"Patrick?" she called out. She looked around to see nothing. The board that was normally filled with different papers and files related to Red John is... filled with nothing. No Patrick was found until she looked up at the window and saw him standing outside. She walked out.
She froze. Patrick was standing in front of a garbage can, throwing different files and papers in the fire. "Patrick, honey? What are you doing?"
"We're close. Very close."
"How close is very close?"
"Oh..." He squeezed his index and thumb, leaving a small amount. "About, uh, this close."
Patrick walked back into the loft. She placed the cover on it before walking back inside.
"Well, can you tell me about it?"
"No. First, I need to sleep."
"Can you tell me what that was outside?"
Patrick sighed, grabbing her shoulders. "Kenz, I haven't slept in a week. I'm beat."
"What do you mean you haven't slept in a week?"
"I need to sleep." Kenzie sighed. "Just gonna take a little rest here. Just a little one. Just a little sleep." Patrick absentmindedly kissed her forehead and got on the makeshift bed. Kenzie gave him a concerned look before walking away.
The next day, Kenzie rushed upstairs and opened the door. She placed her hand on his shoulder and shook him awake. "Patrick, wake up."
He shot up, looking around before staring at Kenzie. He groaned. "Where–what is it?"
"We got a call on a homicide in a motel in East Sac."
"Yeah?"
Kenzie sighed. "The first responders say it looks like Red John."
🙂
Chills ran up Kenzie's back as she and Patrick walked into the crime scene at a motel. A woman was lying in her bed with a bunch of stab wounds. The Red John symbol leered over her on the wall behind her.
She sighed as she noticed Brett and his team took pictures of the scene. "So what do you think?" asked one of the crime photographers. "Is this bogus or actual Red John?"
Brett scoffed. "I've worked Red John's murder scenes since he began. It's totally bogus."
"Ah, that's a shame. I always wanted to work on one of the famous killers." The photographer clicked the shutter.
"Eh, he's been laying low for years, working through friends and proxies."
"He killed just recently, didn't he?"
"Eh, that was an internal issue. Lorelei Martins was one of his own people. Doesn't count."
Kenzie cleared her throat and gave him a fake smile. "Could you guys give us a moment?"
Brett turned around with a frightened look. "Hey, Kenzie." He gasped at the man standing next to her. "Jane." He gestured toward the crime photographer. "Uh, this is my colleague Val Ziskin."
"Hi," said Ziskin.
"You're sure this wasn't Red John, Mr. Partridge?" Kenzie asked with a slight mocking tone.
"Uh... yeah."
"100% sure?" asked Patrick.
"No, I mean, I-I'm surmising." He looked at him. "You're the expert."
