Kenzie had been back at work for a couple of weeks. She was very surprised at how easy it was to get back in the swing of things. She was sitting on the table in Patrick's loft while he was reading a book on his makeshift bed.
She sighed. "You know we're gonna have to talk about it at some point again."
"Talk about what?"
"The list."
"What list?"
"Patrick," she hissed. Before she could say anything else, her phone rang. "Patterson. Sir. Yeah, we'll be right there." She hung up and turned back to Patrick. "That was Bertram. We have a case."
"Huh?"
She got off of the table and took the book out of his hands. "We have a case."
"Now? Uh, I don't want to work right now, Kenz. I need to think."
"Well, you can think later. We need to carry on as normal. We don't want to look so freaked out."
"I'm not freaked out."
Kenzie eyed him suspiciously. They made it to a house in suburbia. Police surrounded the area while talking to each other. The two walked into the home. Patrick stood near Kenzie, looking around. She walked up to the sergeant.
"Hi, guys," the sergeant greeted.
"Hey, Sarge. Good to see you again."
"Nice to see you." The sergeant turned to Patrick. "Hey there." He didn't reply back. She turned to Kenzie with an annoyed look. "He can't say hello?"
Kenzie gave her a small smile. "It's been a tough day. Um, I understand you got the call about 3 hours ago?" She walked over to the body. "What do we got?"
"The victim's name is Sandra Helvig," the sergeant started. "She lives here with her fiance." She pointed to a man sitting in a lounge chair. "That's Cody Benbow, the baseball player. So he comes home from practice and finds her lying right here."
"Looks like she's strangled with her own scarf," Kenzie pointed out.
"The back window is broken. There's both jewelry and cash missing. We're thinking that she came home and surprised a burglar."
"Besides the forced entry, I don't see any obvious signs of a struggle here."
Patrick walked up to Cody. "Hey, Cody, how much was stolen? Dollar value?"
"I don't know, sir," said Cody. "Her engagement ring alone was 50 grand. Um... A couple hundred grand in total."
"What's your batting average this year?"
".260."
"What about last year?"
".312."
"Oh. What happened?"
"You came here to talk about baseball?"
Patrick turned to the sergeant. "Yeah, I'm trying to work here, and you're staring at me like I have two heads. Do I look like I have two heads?"
"No."
Kenzie sighed. "Sarge, why don't you and I go outside and do our paperwork?"
The two of them walked outside to one of the police cars. Kenzie was about to go back inside when Patrick and Cody walked into the front yard. Cody held a gun against Patrick's back.
"Ah, shit," she hissed.
"Gun! He's got a gun!" exclaimed one of the officers.
Everyone, including Kenzie, hid behind their vehicle with their guns raised.
