She looked up at Patrick's expression. "You know what Red John's trying to do, don't you?"

"He asked me if I'm ready to quit," said Patrick.

"He's messing with your head. Don't let him." Concern flashed over her face. "You okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine."

"Shut up. You tortured the guy. Are you hearing me? Tortured!"

"I gave an evil psychopath justice." Patrick looked at Kenzie. "Come on, you're telling Marx didn't deserve what he got?"

***

"You know what? That's a good idea," said Wainwright. "You're suspended as of this moment. You're not gonna come into this office. You're not gonna have anything to do with the CBI. There'll be a hearing on your status in 30 days. And I want you to know I'm gonna personally recommend CBI discontinue you permanently as a consultant."

Kenzie turned to Wainwright. "Woah, Luther, that's not necessary. Patrick's just very stressed out. I promise you, after a couple of days, he'll be back to his normal self."

"I understand that he's under some distress, Kenzie, but he shamed us today. I'm not gonna let that happen again."

"Then, let me deal with the consequences. Don't fire him."

Wainwright looked at Kenzie with a look she couldn't distinguish. "I'm sorry." He placed his hand on her shoulder before walking away.

"You're a pathetic little boy," said Patrick. Kenzie froze.

"Excuse me?"

"You're a child. Daddy was mean to you. He thought you were soft. You're a mama's boy. Go home, little boy. Go home to mama. Go on. Off to mama."

"Patrick, shut up."

"No, Kenz. Don't defend him. You wanna know something? Luther wanted to suspend you for mental health reasons and wanted to be your knight in shining armor, claiming he was trying to protect you."

Kenzie laughed it off until she saw the look on Wainwright's face. "What?! W-why would you do that?"

"It's so obvious. He's in love with you..."

"On second thought, you're not suspended. You're fired. Get out of here right now."

"Now, wait a minute," said Kenzie. Patrick shrugged and walked toward the elevator. Kenzie followed after him.

"Patrick, wait." She stopped in front of the elevator. "Don't do anything rash. We can work this out. We'll fix it."

The elevator bell dinged. "I doubt that."

"I can come by your place tonight. We can talk."

Patrick smiled at her and placed a kiss on her forehead. "You're sweet." He got into the elevator.

"Let me help you," said Kenzie, her voice breaking. She sadly watched as the elevator doors closed in front of her.

Kenzie gave Pat a small smile as she walked by, letting her talk to Teresa. They walked upon the body and grimaced at the gunshot wound on the victim's face.

"What did that?" asked Kenzie.

"Shotgun from about 6 inches away," said Pat. "John Doe all the way. No wallet, no tattoos, no jewelry, no face."
