"Edlyn!? Edlyn!" My father called to me knocking on the door rapidly. I put my elvish styled harp away quite quickly rushing up to answer the door. When I open the door he has a ton of things in his arms.
"Wow Dad, what's the big occasion?" I ask taking vegetables, meats, and cheeses from his arms. I set it all on our small little wooden dining table.
"The Autumn Festival, remember?" He gives me a big, bright smile setting more things down. I just roll my eyes and continue to help him unpack things. Sometimes I get a little sick of all the festivals Dale does but in the end it turns out to be fun. "You know I heard the prince of Erebor was coming tonight." I look at my dad across from me and smile, he gives me a wink.
"Dad I'm not really princess material." I chuckle starting to rip leaves from heads of cabbage.
"Well you're my princess..." He comes around the table kissing me on the head.
"I love you."
"Love you too, Lyn. You've been doing a lot around here why don't you try to find Milly."
"Are you sure you don't need any help?" I ask.
"Nope." With his consent I grab my book and leave. Milly is my good friend, she's mostly been hanging out with Ardy lately. He doesn't exactly like her like she wants him too. Sadly he's into me but he's not at all my type, I'm kind of picky when it comes to men. I'm twenty four and still haven't really talked to anyone. I guess I've never really wanted to fall for somebody and have kids.
I walk down the stone road to my friends house. Kids are already out playing on the small merry-go-round in the middle of town having a blast. "Eddy! Eddy-lyn!" I hear Milly shouting my name. When I turn around she has a huge smile on her face. "Ardy asked me to go with him to the autumn festival tonight!" She shrieks.
"Oh that's great Mill!"
"We should get ready come back with me," Before I know it she's dragging me back to her home. "Here sit." She pushes me down on a stool in her bedroom and starts working at my hair as I read my book. I know she is doing some type of braid because it's tight.
"Ow, Mill you're pulling!" I fuss.
"Oh quit being such a coward! You want it to stay in don't you!?" She tugs and pulls again. We're like sisters so we tend to fuss at each other a lot. I can't even concentrate on what I'm reading.
"Are you done?" I groan.
"No, what are you wearing?"
"My purple robes."
"Perfect!" She says going across the room and bringing of a basket of flowers. She then starts sticking lilacs and baby's breath in the braided up do. It looks sort of like a crown when she's done. I smile when she finishes laying the book on her vanity.
"Wow Mill it's great, it really is!" I go to touch it but she slaps my hands away.
"Well don't touch it!" She laughs. "My turn!" So we switch spots and I braid hers down her back as tight as I can. She points out the flowers she wants in hers which are small pink ones. So I stick them in her braid. We both admire our hair in the mirror.
"I think Ardy will like it." I quickly say picking up my book from her vanity.
"Really? Goodness, I hope he does." She smiles. I'm glad this is coming true for her, she's always fantasized being with Ardy.
"Did you hear?" I ask.
"What?"
"The dwarf prince is coming tonight." She scoffs. Pulling loose pieces of hair out of the braid making it somewhat messy.
"I'll believe it when I see it. Have you ever seen him before? All the dwarves do is stay in that mountain."
"Yeah, listen Mill I need to go get my robe on I'll see you tonight."
"See you Eddy!" That's when I go back home. Once I get there dad is still working hard cooking. I go in my room shutting the door so I can change. When I get my robe on I stand on the bed looking out of my window. I have a perfect view of Erebor from my room. The braziers are lit indicating that there is life in that mountain. Sometimes I wonder if there is piles of gold beneath that mountain. From stories I have heard there are mounds of it.
I get off the bed and go out to help my father of course he fusses because I should be resting or doing something else. I'd always rather be helping him out it's the least I could do. He lost my mother during childbirth. She got ill after having me and died just a few days later. My dad's been broken every since then. He'd be lost without me and I'd be lost without him.
We put the finishing touches in the stew and then head out. Autumn colors fill the sky as the sun sets. There is music, singing, dancing, and food. I run off to find Milly and Ardy. I find them dancing in a circle of people so I decide to jump in. We dance until we can't dance anymore, then we sit and take a break. Everyone is having the best time of their lives.
"Eddy, they're going to let off fireworks soon!" Milly jumps up and down like a little girl.
"You get excited over the smallest things Mill." I chuckle.
"I don't!"
"You do you really do!" Ardy comes up with two drinks handing them to us. Then he sits in between us and we all talk awhile about pointless things, like the weather and such. After a few minutes the party grows quiet and there is a huge horn sounded. We all trade glances with each other. All three of us scramble up making it to the town square. And there he stood, the Prince Beneath The Mountain...Thorin.
