All three times she survived. Three times she had fulfilled the desires of the men today. A little bit of hope rose in her. Would this really be the last time today? Or was it false hope and was the discussion last night about something else? Hoping for something good seemed impossible. Every time she hoped for something, the opposite was proven.
She had hoped that she might have seen Beth today. She had hoped that she would hear from her. She had hoped that the men might change their minds and let her go. She had hoped that after four times of sex, once yesterday and three times today, the men were done with her. But no, no sign of Beth. And whether those men were done with her, she wasn't so sure either.
Then suddenly, there was another loud bang on the door, which was thrown open with considerable aggression and slammed against the wall. 'No, no, no. Not again, right?'. One by one the men entered the room, all staring at Viv, who tried to hide her rising fear as best she could.
'Well, handsome. We thought it would be fitting to reward your good behavior, because that's who we are. A piece of paper, that's what you get from us. A piece of paper, on which you can write something to that girlfriend of yours.'
'Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait. This can't be real'. They were doing the most horrible things and now she was suddenly allowed to write something to Beth? This was false information. They were going to tempt her with the idea of communicating with Beth in some way, but they were never going to deliver the letter. Of course not. These men were not to be trusted.
But still... Still, a little bit of hope shot through her body. Hope that she could reach Beth and tell her that she was still alive. That she could tell her one more time that she loved her. That she had to go on with her life, whether that would be with or without her.
It was hard to think about this, that the moment she stood with Beth in her arms might be the last time she touched her. That the sex they had last night might be the last time. That it might be the last time Beth's lips were pressed to hers. That they couldn't even say goodbye, because she still wasn't sure whether she would get out of this alive.
That this was something she had to think about, that she couldn't shut her mind off of it, when she was only just out of her twenties, was indescribably difficult. But now was not the time to cry about it, now was the moment when she could just possibly reach Beth. Those tears, that almost jumped out of her eyes, would flow later. Once again she clung to hope, as she had done all along in this situation.
The man, the still unknown to her, handed her a pen and a piece of paper, including a large white envelope and a small lamp. Finally, a little light in the darkness, which gave her the opportunity to actually see something and to write something down.
She was in doubt, very in doubt. What was she going to do? Was she going to write the truth? In the hope that the men wouldn't check the letter and that she could inform Beth of something that might help her. Or was she going to lie? And paint the situation a little rosier than it really was, so as not to risk the consequences that came with writing the truth. Was she going to write down names? Was she going to describe the men?
Somehow it just seemed like the situation was the same as usual. Because even now, when her thoughts were already shooting off in all directions, there was still room in the chaos that was already in the brain to doubt whether to write the truth or not.
