Tw: physical abuse

Havyns pov
—————

It had been a week since we saw Taylor and thankfully she kept her word by staying out of our family business. I knew if anyone got involved I'd lose my siblings, we'd all be split up forever. That's the last thing we need.

I woke up on a Saturday morning to Maisie sleeping beside me. I smiled at her cute snores as I sat up to go check on Theo. He was up doing some homework, "hey bud."

"Hey." He mumbled.

"Whatcha working on?"

"Math." He looked up at me, "I just don't get it!"

"Let me have a look." I smiled reassuring him, maths was never my strong point but surely six year old math should be easy enough.

"Okay so 5+6?" I looked at him to see if I was reading the right one.

He nodded, "I ran out of fingers."

Confused on his logic, I started to explain.

"Well, what's 5+5? You've enough fingers for that." I try not to giggle at his silliness.

"10!" He held out his hands.

"Well done, buddy." I smiled at him, "so add one more, since 6 is one more than 5."

He nodded, it was clicking in his brain.

"So 11?"

"Yeah! You're so smart, sometimes you just need to break it up more rather than doing it all at once." I ruffle his hair, proud of him.

"Thanks Havie." He beamed, working on the rest as I made my way downstairs to get some breakfast for us. I saw post lying on the ground beside the door, strange we never get post. I noticed it was addressed to me so I quickly stuffed it into my pyjama pockets, grabbing some toast for the three of us. I headed upstairs, giving both of them their toast. Maisie had now woken up and was in their room, playing with some toys. I stood, watching them demolish their toast within seconds. Wishing there was more for them to eat.

I went to my room to get changed, opening the letter;

To Havyn,

I can't stop thinking about the three of you and your story. I want to help you somehow if you'll let me. Please come to my concert on Sunday, I'll see you after it.

Thanks, Taylor xx

I thought I'd told her to forget about us? Why did she care so much? How on earth do I manage to sneak us to her concert and back?

Sighing I hid the three tickets under my floorboard, just incase we can go. I knew I had to keep it quiet from everyone until I make my mind up. Maisie came in with tears streaming down her face.

I rushed over to her, crouching down. "What's wrong, Mais?"

She gripped onto me, "I was thirsty so I went downstairs and daddy was there." Her voice broke as she spoke quietly. She showed me her arm, rolling up her sleeve. How could someone hurt someone so little?

I kissed it better, "you're okay, I've got you. Next time, come to me first, okay?"

She nodded as I pulled her into a hug, enraged that someone would hurt her. Someone being our father.

Theo appeared in the doorway, "what happened?"

"Dad did." I replied, inviting him over for a group hug. He accepted.

"Why do they hurt us?" He asked innocently.

"I'm not sure, T." I wrapped an arm around him, resting my cheek on his head. Maybe accepting Taylor's offer wouldn't be a bad idea? We just could never come back here.
