refusal

My social worker, Elena, talked through different plans that could happen to me. I wasn't happy with any of them.

"No but you're forgetting, I'm not leaving my siblings." I snapped at her. She had been talking for some time.

"Havyn, I'm not sure that's possible. No one's going to foster all three of you." She replied with a taste of annoyance.

This was my worst nightmare. I would've preferred to go back home than leave my siblings behind. They were everything to me. I've raised them myself.

She left not too long after, I sat and sobbed. I hated all of this.

"Havie?" I looked up, Taylor was standing there.

"What." I snapped at her. At the only person who's shown me any sort of kindness and provided so much comfort.

She didn't say anything back, she just crawled onto my bed and hugged me. I refused at first, fighting her off me. I just wanted to be alone. She started rubbing circles on my back, trying to calm me down. Defeated, I sobbed into her chest. I clung to her as she whispered sweet nothings into my ear. I didn't realise how much I needed this. I couldn't remember when I was last comforted by a hug that wasn't from a kid. Usually it was me comforting them.

I woke up in a car, the last thing I could remember was me having a breakdown on Taylor. I looked around and saw Maisie and Theo infront of me, and Taylor was beside me.

"Hey." She whispered, smiling.

"What's happening." I was so confused.

"I spoke to your social worker, and she allowed you guys to stay at mine until further arrangement has been made." Taylor explained to me gently.

"Thank you." Tears pricked at my eyes, no one has ever been as caring as Taylor has been, "you don't have to."

"I know but I want to."

Those words were all I needed to hear. She squeezed my hand softly as we pulled up to familiar gates. I helped Maisie and Theo out of the car, carrying Maisie the whole way. She looked exhausted, clinging onto her stuffy and sucking her thumb. Taylor showed me their room to put Maisie to bed. Theo climbed in beside her.

"What about the bedtime song?" My little sister mumbled sleepily. I was slightly embarrassed now in front of Taylor.

"Song?" Taylor raised her eyebrows.

"Yeah!" Theo smiled.

"Uhm it's actually just safe and sound by you." I turned to Taylor.

She smiled, "do you sing?"

"Not very well." I gave her a small smile.

"I'll sing with you." She took my hand and led us to her guitar collection.

"I'm not that talented." I laughed.

"It's for me." She replied.

We sat on the bed with the two little ones as we started to sing Safe and Sound. It was the first time that I actually believed we were safe and sound. I looked at Taylor as I was singing to see her staring back with the biggest smile on her face. Both of my siblings were fast asleep so we slowly walked out of the room.

"How are you feeling?" Taylor spoke as soon as we made it to the landing.

"I'm fine." I smiled at her, "thanks for doing this. I'm sure we'll be out of your hair soon."

"Don't worry about it, I'll have you here for as long as possible." She pulled me in for a hug, I stood awkwardly.

"You aren't use to that, are you?" She giggled, rubbing my back.
