I walk down the halls with Bailey as we walk from the library.

"So how are you and Kai?" She asks.

"Fine? He said he wants something more but I don't know. I'm unpredicatable," I joke.

"Leighton," Bailey groans. "This guy is obviously in love with you."

"No he's not. Doesn't he have a girlfriend?" I ask with a small tone.

"Had. He had a girlfriend."

"And what happened to her?"

"She cheated on him."

For a second my heart sank, I heard 'he cheated on her.'

"Oh." Is all I say.

"Welp I'm starving so I'll see you later. Love ya!" Bailey hugs me.

"Love you too!" I hug her back and I continue walking back to the dorm.

The door is unlocked, indicating Kai is home.

The lights are only on in our bedroom.

"Kai! I'm home. Are you?"

No response.

Is he asleep?

I walk into our bedroom.

Kai is sprawled on the bed, completely still.

My breath catches in my throat. "Kai!" I rush over, shaking him urgently. "Kai, wake up!"

There's no response.

His face is pale, his breathing shallow and uneven. I spot the anxiety pill bottle on the floor and my stomach churns.

He takes anxiety pills?

Focus, Leighton!

Oh my Jesus.

I grab my phone and dial 911, my hands shaking uncontrollably.

"Please, you have to help me! My roommate—he's unconscious. I think something happened. I don't know how many pills he took but !"

The dispatcher's calm, professional voice cuts through my panic. "Okay okay, it's okay, I'm sending an ambulance. Do you have Narcan or naloxone?"

Narcan.

The word hits me like a jolt.

I remember seeing it in the first aid kit.

I drop the phone and start rummaging through the drawer until I find the nasal spray. My hands are trembling as I read the instructions.
