What if we crash? Those are my thoughts as the plane's engines hum softly as we soar above the clouds, the sun beginning to set in a blaze of pink and orange.
It's a beautiful sight, but I can't fully enjoy it with the knot of anxiety tightening in my stomach.
Going back to the academy in Florida means facing everything we've left behind—and everything that's waiting for us.
Like my dad. If he's still there.
I glance at Kai, who's slouched in the seat next to me, earbuds in and eyes closed.
His brow furrows slightly, as if he's deep in thought even in his sleep.
Despite his usual demeanor, there's a softness in his features now, a vulnerability he rarely shows.Something I've only seen a few times.
"Hey," I whisper, nudging him gently. His eyes flutter open, and he gives me a questioning look. "We're almost there."
He pulls out his earbuds and stretches, his gaze shifting to the window. "Good," he mutters, though there's a hint of something softer in his voice.
Relief, maybe?
As the plane begins its descent, my heart starts to race.
I try to focus on the familiar sights below—the winding rivers, the sprawling suburbs, and finally, the glimmering coastline.
Florida.
We touch down smoothly, and soon we're navigating the busy airport, our suitcases trailing behind us.
The air is thick and humid.
Like hell.
It's a bit overwhelming, but also oddly comforting.
Kai is quiet as we make our way to the taxi stand, his expression unreadable.
I reach for his hand, and he squeezes it briefly before letting go, his version of reassurance.
The ride to the dorms is filled with a comfortable silence.
I watch the familiar scenery pass by—the palm trees swaying in the breeze, the sun casting long shadows as it dips lower in the sky. The water.
I really need to go surfing.
When we finally pull up to the dorm building, I take a deep breath.
"C'mon." Kai says, his voice breaking through my thoughts.
I nod.
We grab our bags and head towards the entrance.
The elevator ride is short, and soon we're standing in front of our dorm room.
I fumble with the keys, my hands shaking slightly. Kai stands close behind me, a steady presence that helps calm my nerves.
