"Would you rather fight one horse-sized duck or a hundred duck-sized horses?" I ask Kai.
"Jesus fuck, babe. How the flying fuck am I supposed to answer that." He groans.
"I dunno," I shrug and he runs a nervous hand through his hair.
"You okay?" I ask, nudging him lightly with my elbow.
He looks over at me, his expression serious, but there's a hint of something else in his eyes—something I can't quite place. "Yeah," he says, but it sounds like he's trying to convince himself more than me.
I raise an eyebrow, not buying it. "You sure? You've haven't even commented once on how I'm showing off my tattoos."
He smiles but it doesn't reach his eyes. "Just... thinking."
"About?" I press, curious now.
He hesitates, his eyes flicking to the ground as if searching for the right words. "About us," he finally says, so quietly that I almost don't hear him.
My heart skips a beat, and I feel a flutter of nerves in my stomach. "Us?"
Oh no.
He's breaking up with me.
It's over.
He stops walking, and I do too, turning to face him.
The sidewalk is quiet, with only a few other students passing by, but in this moment, it feels like it's just the two of us. Kai takes a deep breath, running a hand through his hair, a sign that he's nervous—really nervous.
"So... would you want to go out with me? Like, on an actual date?"
"What do you mean? We're already dating, no?"
"I mean yeah. But we haven't gone on an actual date."
"I see." I pretend to think.
My answer is yes, obviously.
But I can't let him no that.
Hehe.
"Baby?" He looks concerned.
His sweet soul.
"Sure," I smile.
"Sure? Just sure?"
"Of course!" I correct.
He smiles.
