My feet pound against the concrete.
I turn into the alleyway and see my mom.
Dead.
"Mom!" I scream, my voice breaking. "Mom, please wake up."
"All your fault," She whispers. "You shouldn't have wanted to go out."
"I know, I'm sorry. Please wake up. Please." I cry.
But there's no answer.
Suddenly, the ground opens up beneath me, and I'm falling into a void. The wind howls in my ears, and I reach out, trying to grab onto something, anything. But there's nothing to hold onto. I'm falling, falling, falling—
"Leighton! Wake the fuck up. It's just a dream."
I jolt awake, my heart hammering in my chest. My room is dark, the only light coming from the streetlamp outside my window.
I'm drenched in sweat, my breaths coming in shallow gasps.
It takes me a moment to realize I'm not alone.
Kai's arms are around me, his hold firm yet gentle.
His voice is a soothing murmur in my ear. "Hey, it's okay. You're safe. It was just a nightmare."
I cling to him, my fingers digging into his shirt as I try to steady my breathing. "It was so real," I whisper, my voice trembling. "I...I..."
I can't explain to him. He doesn't know.
He should.
Yeah.
Kai tightens his embrace, his hand rubbing soothing circles on my back. "Shh, I've got you. You're not alone. I'm here."
Suddenly, the tears well up again, but so does something else.
A growing sense of panic and discomfort.
His touch, meant to comfort, starts to feel suffocating. My skin prickles, and I feel like I can't breathe.
Can't breathe.
"I can't—" I gasp, pulling away from him. "I can't breathe. Please, don't touch me."
Kai immediately lets go, his hands hovering in the air, unsure. "Leighton, what's wrong?"
I scoot back, pressing myself against the headboard, my hands shaking. "I don't know. I just—everything feels too much right now. I need space."
He nods, giving me the distance I need. "Okay. I'm here, just not touching you. You're safe."
My breathing is still erratic, but without his touch, it's easier to focus. I close my eyes, trying to ground myself. "Breathe, Leighton," I whisper to myself. "Just breathe."
Kai's voice is soft, a steady anchor. "In and out, nice and slow. You're doing great."
I match his rhythm, taking deep breaths. In and out, in and out.
Gradually, the tightness in my chest eases, and my breathing steadies.
"There you go," he murmurs, his voice soothing but distant enough to give me space.
I nod, still feeling shaky but more in control. "Thank you," I whisper, my voice barely audible. "I'm sorry. I just... I couldn't handle it. I'm sorry. I'm sorry."
"Please don't apologize," Kai replies gently. "I get it, okay? I get it."
He get's it.
"Do you want to talk about it?" he asks gently, still keeping his distance.
I think for a moment.
"I'm here," he assures me. "Whenever you're ready, I'm here."
I take a deep breath.
I need to put on my big girl pants and do this.
"I'll tell you. Everything." I say
