We had come back to the States this year, with three pre-season friendlies scheduled: against Chelsea, Barca and Liverpool. Our first stop was California and cameras were following us everywhere, which was quite annoying but apparently we were shooting a tour documentary/diary/something like that.
"It was pretty boy's turn today at interviews" Fabio chuckled as our small Italian group sat together at lunch. "Who's pretty boy?" I asked, turning around in the food hall to look at my players. Maybe Ferran Torres? But the looks on the faces of my friends gave me the answer. "Oh... right" I replied and pushed a fork of chicken into my mouth. "Probably confessed his eternal love for you" Andrea swooned and placed a hand over his heart. I smacked the back of his head and sent the boys glares, who looked quite amused nevertheless.
After a draw to Chelsea, we left for Texas and on our second day there, I got a notification on my phone calendar that it was my time to get interviewed for that documentary. So I made my way to the room which had been indicated to me in my memo e-mail. "Buongiorno" I greeted everyone friendly and two women were there to touch up my make-up a bit as the producer told me a bit about what he wanted to talk about with me.
Eventually, we got started and we talked about our last season's successes as well as our expectations for this upcoming one. "Now... your players have all spoken very highly of you and we want to show you some clips we got from them and maybe you can elaborate further on these memories" the interviewer asked me as he passed me an iPad and I did a surprised face but was actually curious.
First up, was one from Fagioli and I pressed play. "Bea... is fantastic. I'm really proud to be able to call her my friend... I still remember during my playing ban, she used to always send me a voice message after a game - about everything that happened, from the VIP box, to the locker room and the pitch. She also always made sure to wind me up and send me snaps whenever she'd pass a betting shop" he chuckled and I did too as the clip ended. "It was really important to me to show my support during a hard period of a player. Mental health with athletes is so important and while the generation... above us has a more conservative approach to this, I always made sure that the doors to our club's therapists would open and close frequently instead of allowing the players to pass it with their heads hanging low" I explained and nodded at the camera.
The next clip was shown and I almost froze when I saw Kenan's face on my screen. But I tried to play it cool and just pressed play. "Let's talk about your development here, you basically arrived as a kid and grew up into the man we see now" the interviewer asked and showed him clips of him playing when he was younger. "My gosh... the haircut..." he sighed embarassedly and I chuckled when I saw the clip of him with the really long hair in a bun. The next clip of him playing was one from his Serie A debut, with the slightly shorter, but still long, hair, and the earring that was long gone now.
"Already a better look" he chuckled and turned the iPad around to show it to the camera. "The coach made me get a haircut, right the next day after that game" he explained and smiled, while my lips were pressed together to not show them shaking as I was affected by that memory. "Tell us more" the interviewer asked and Kenan laughed shyly, his eyes still fixed on that iPad. Then, he looked into the camera and started talking: "Actually, I went with my ex-girlfriend - well then she wasn't my girlfriend yet, but I remember fancying her a lot. I was so excited when the coach made her go with me to cut my hair. I would have also taken a rocket ship to the moon with her, if Allegri would have asked me to do that" he chuckled before pausing a few seconds.
"We actually went to her hairdresser, who I don't think regularly does men's haircuts. But yeah, she decided the style with him and yeah... I've always had it now" he added and my breath was shaking a bit when the clip ended. "You should cut some parts of that" I suggested to the interviewer. "No, it's perfect! The viewers will love it!" he replied and smiled at me encouragingly. "Ok, and now your take, let's go!" he instructed me and I got into position.
"I remember that day" I chuckled, trying to put on a show, but I soon turned softer..., genuine again. "Me and my hairdresser had a good vision, no?" I joked at the camera and winked. I think the producers got that I wasn't going to say more, so they showed me a clip about Cambiaso goofing around, talking about me being a huge gossip and such a wonderful person and a beautiful girl... he just couldn't stop yapping. "Ok, but you're definitely cutting out parts from him" I joked, making the others laugh.
We were done eventually and I returned to my room with mixed feelings. Kenan and I had so much history, and I knew that I still loved him. But I had all those barriers up in my mind and couldn't break them down so easily all alone. He had been the one to manage all those years ago, but was I going to let him do that once again? However, my deep thoughts were interrupted when a new notification was shown on my phone that a post, where I had been tagged, had been uploaded on the club's Instagram channel.
