I stood at the edge of the university campus, my heart pounding with a mix of excitement and anxiety. This was it-the start of the new chapter I had been dreaming about for so long. My name is Sophia Martinez, and today, I begin my journey at university of Columbia.

For years, I'd imagined this moment-walking across the green lawns of a historic campus, surrounded by people from all corners of the world. Now that it's real, it feels both exhilarating and overwhelming. I remember all those late-night study sessions and endless applications, wondering if it would ever come to this.

Growing up in Canada, I had always been captivated by the idea of studying abroad. My family was incredibly supportive, but the reality of leaving them behind makes my stomach churn. The excitement of exploring a new culture and meeting new people is tempered by a gnawing homesickness I can't quite shake off.

As I look around, I see students chatting in small groups, some laughing and others hurrying to their next class. I try to take it all in-the blend of old architecture and modern amenities, the smell of freshly cut grass mixed with the aroma of coffee from a nearby café.

I take a deep breath and remind myself that this is exactly what I've wanted. I'm here to learn, to grow, and perhaps even to find a little bit of romance along the way. The thought of making new friends and experiencing new things fills me with hope.

As I navigated through the busy campus, trying to get a sense of direction, I accidentally bumped into someone. "Oh, I'm so sorry!" I said, stepping back quickly.

"No worries at all!" The girl smiled warmly. "I should have been watching where I was going."

We both chuckled, and I took a moment to really look at her. She had a friendly demeanor and bright, inquisitive eyes. "I'm Sophia," I introduced myself.

"I'm Emma Clarke," she replied. "Nice to meet you, Sofia. Are you a freshman here too?"

"Yes, I am," I said. "I just arrived today. Are you? I mean, if you don't mind me asking."

Emma nodded. "Yes, I'm a freshman as well. I'm still figuring out where everything is. Have you managed to find your way to the dorms yet?"

I shook my head. "Not yet. I'm actually about to go and register for my dorm. It's been a bit overwhelming."

"Same here," Emma said with a laugh. "I was just heading to the dance auditions for freshers. I've always been passionate about dance and thought I'd give it a shot. It's a great way to meet people, too."

I brightened at her mention of dance. "That sounds amazing! I've always loved dancing but wasn't sure if I'd have time or find the right group here."

Emma's eyes lit up. "You should definitely come check it out! It's happening later today. I think it would be a fun way to get involved and maybe even make a few friends."

We continued walking together, chatting about our excitement and the nerves that came with starting college. As it turned out, Emma and I were both in the same introductory class, which made me feel a bit more at ease knowing I'd have a familiar face around.
