Cross groaned, her tail alone dwarfing the others at a massive 250 feet long from nose to rear, and her tail only making it worse. "I may have overdone it. I can already feel my hunger coming back. Just holding this size is going to be food prohibitive."
"Tell me about it, Cross," Krillin laughed. "You're really outdid yourself. You're bigger than the whole train."
She groaned again, even slight movements causing her stomach to rumble. "It's a shame to have to lose all this mass so quickly after you all treated me."
"Well, it's not like we can feed you at that size to keep you full size," Bulma mused. "And if we want to get to Namek, we'd have to leave you behind."
Cross paused, musing, "There is a solution, though I'm not sure if I want to entertain it. Losing the mass is just as disappointing."
"What is it?" Goku sounded curious.
"I mentioned before how I became a robot unicorn once. That was a way I could help my counterpart on another world survive against hostile enemies in a hostile environment by becoming her transportation. It's a modification of a spell I learned with a previous team. Instead of giant robots, as wizards and mages, we became titans, then could combine and transform into a dragon or a knight to fight giant demons. When I met N-22 and helped make her power suit, she needed a mecha, so I became one. While with my mage team, it was always as a conclusion to a fight. With her, it became a lifestyle. I remained in that form until our companions could harvest enough parts off me to build a non-sentient robot, and I returned home."
"Harvest?" Gohan asked, confused.
"I was a robot but also alive. I could be upgraded and repaired, but also stripped for parts. Gold and Silver would take a part, study it, build a copy, and then reinstall it, slowly building a second me over time. At least physically. I could do that again, become a robot dragon, and then sync up to the train and speed us up further. Then all I would need is sunlight to recharge my batteries. And as I took damage from any enemies, I could discard the broken parts and scale down organically instead of shutting it all down."
"Is there a downside?" Bulma mused.
"Not technically, it's just..."
"Just what?"
"It's a bit unsettling to just discard my humanity. I don't like doing it frivolously."
"Seems to me then you have a choice to make," Piccolo stated flatly.
Cross nodded and took a long breath. "And I think we all know what it is. Even if it's not what I like ideally, expelling the mass you all just worked so hard to give me feels like the ultimate disrespect."
Rolling onto her four legs, Cross groaned, her scales shimmering as pink energy leaked from the cracks, enveloping her in blinding light. As it passed, a shimmering pink and silver dragon stood in her place. Her once reptilian eyes were now glass windows to a control cockpit. Her wings, unfurled, shimmered in silver, gold, and pink, with rows of black solar panels along her spine humming with high-tech energy. Bands of light flowed over her body like veins, and her claws sported wheels on the heels.
"Cross?"
Her voice had changed, synthetic and metallic, yet unmistakably hers. It sounded more like the human Cross than the deep baritone of the dragon she had been recently. Her chest opened like a loading ramp. "Hop aboard for the grand tour."
There was a soft laugh and a beep as she tilted her head. "Ah...the bio monitors are done. Feel free to hand them over to Bulma; she knows where they need to go in my lab for the analysis phase."
"Is this alright?" Gohan ran his fingers along the loading ramp rails. "Ms. Cross, you're alright...right?"
She nodded, and the group slowly boarded. Bulma gave a soft gasp in awe as she looked around, recognizing functions and tying them back to their original organs. "Lung environmental system, liver internal atmosphere filter, the heart—unsurprisingly, her generator, the very core of what powers her systems. The stomach is a biofuel converter that produces more power from biomatter, with the waste byproduct sent to her intestines, now functioning as vent and exhaust systems. Kidneys are temperature controls, the spleen seems like a hub for healing beads and repair drones, and the pancreas is basically power management. Her eyes are the cockpit windows but also scanners and visual sensors, the nose is an olfactory sensor, ears are audio systems, and her mouth contains the fire breath tanks. Various other weapons are dotted about the skin, which can change color, acting as camouflage or just a cosmetic change. And of course, there's the uterus, now a combat drone assembly and launching bay." The last part made Puar, Chi-Chi, and Bulma more than a little off-put.
As Bulma, Chi-Chi, and Gohan settled into the cockpit for takeoff, they flew back into space. Instructions on the main window directed them for docking procedures, and in the cool void of space, Cross's booster rockets glowed pink-hot as the new dragon train picked up speed.
While the entire transformation was hard to grasp in the moment, Bulma couldn't help but look around at the systems, wanting to take them apart, study them, and upgrade them. She knew Cross probably wouldn't mind, especially if it made her stronger, but it gave her pause nonetheless.
