The crew was gathered outside Capsule Corp and the train, which had five cars with animal heads: lion leading, eagle, crocodile, wildcat, and panda, with a round mini car trailing behind to make two extra cars. Goku, Krillin, Yamcha, Piccolo, Gohan, and Bulma were all getting ready to board, adjusting the straps of their bio-monitor watches as Chi-Chi rushed up with a large bag over her shoulders.
"You can't go! Did you even bring food?" she worried, chastising Goku and Cross. "Why are you dragging Gohan along? He's just a boy!"
"Chi-Chi, be reasonab—" Goku tried to say.
"What is reasonable about taking a child across space into dan—"
Cross stepped forward, confidence in her voice as she held Chi-Chi's hand. "Gohan has already been targeted by the Saiyans twice, and his bursts of rage and the revelation that he's a Saiyan mean we need to keep him close. Besides, my bio-brace needs time to analyze him, and once done, I can work on mastering that potential and the beast."
"Piccolo cut off his tail. He'll be fine. He should be studying."
Again, Cross was prepared. "Hiding from the beast is not healthy—"
"I'm with Chi-Chi on this, Cross," Bulma cut in. "I was there when Goku was Gohan's age and lost control and changed."
Cross's voice became very somber. "I know what it's like to have a beast inside you can't control."
"It's not the same," Chi-Chi protested.
"My mother thought the same up to the day she died, and my brother and I had to deal with the consequences because of it."
The group was silent as Cross led them in, motioning to the dining benches inside the car. The group took a seat as Chi-Chi unwrapped her massive bag and started to feed Gohan large meat chops, then shared with the rest.
Cross continued, "My mother was...not human. She was from a place called Zyuland, a place full of animal people. She fled to my Earth, where she met my father. Together they had my brother and me, and through all of that, she never revealed to any of us that she was a Zyuman. It wasn't until after she had died, and the seal she had placed on our family had broken, that we found out who we were. Transformed into animal creatures, we had to find out who and what we were with no information to go by other than the fact that at one point, my father had known the name. So we began our journey to discover ourselves. I, in particular, had to discover how to control the beast within. I was already an adult when this happened, and I had no preparation for the reveal." Cross looked deeply into Chi-Chi's eyes. "So you see, denying Goku and Gohan their other half will only hurt them in the long run. But with my help, we can master it. I promise you we will." Cross gave a small smile. "After all, you're looking at it right now."
The group stared at Cross for a moment, taking in the information and really looking at Goku and Gohan. Even Chi-Chi really met her husband and son's eyes, and slowly she nodded. "Can you promise me that?"
Cross smiled. "If we had more time and a more perfect world, I'd spend the time now with the bio-brace to just study them both and find a solution. But we're not in a perfect time or a perfect world. But I promise you there are two things to understand about me and heroes from my world. Number one: Earth's Defenders never surrender. Number two: Earth's Defenders will never let a child's smile be broken by evil."
Chi-Chi smiled. Cross just radiated an energy that told her she wasn't lying. "OK, Cross. I'm trusting my son and my husband to you."
Cross smiled. "You know, if you're that worried, you could come along."
Bulma cut in. "That's way too dangerous. Besides, we don't have enough room."
Cross motioned to the cab around them. "This is a space train. I have more than enough room for five people. That's kind of what trains are for. While we're on the planet, my train can keep them in orbit and keep them safe. If she really wants to come along, she can. We'll keep her safe."
"So that means Puar can come?" Yamcha asked hopefully.
Cross nodded, looking to Bulma. "You said you'd foot the bill for the food on the trip. Do you mind adding a few more mouths?"
Bulma laughed. "The more, the merrier! This will be fun!"
Cross nodded and began a tour of the train. "Well, as you can see, we have a dining room. There are sleeping quarters, and as I just alluded to, the train does come with its own food provided by my employer, the Rainbow Line."
"Your employer?" Krillin asked.
Cross nodded. "Normally, when I'm finished with a world, I set up a station for the Rainbow Line, allowing visitors from previous worlds to come and visit the new world and vice versa." Cross smiled. "It's kind of how I afford being the Multiverse Protector."
The gang all laughed with Cross. Gohan took Cross aside as the others picked out rooms.
"Can you really teach me control?"
Cross smiled. "Remember the meditation technique I taught you? That's the trick."
Gohan stuck out his tongue in disgust. "That form is so gross."
"That form is distilled control. Master it and you master the beast within."
Gohan paused, looking down the way. "Make sure Dad knows it too."
Cross nodded. "It's a promise."
Cross then ran to catch up with Bulma, who was headed for the lead car.
"This train is incredible! I've never seen anything like it."
Cross smiled. "It's actually an older model. As part of my contract as a free agent, they gave me the old Galaxy Line as they pressed a new one into service. I earn a commission for every new world I hook up to the line."
Bulma was nervous. "What if we don't want visitors from other Earths?"
Cross shrugged. "That's fine. I'm here to help and scout if it's a good place for a station. As a business built on tourism and heroics, there isn't much value in a hostile station. No one will use it, and visitors will just be harassed. But the worlds that are open for visitors gain steady income from the Earth next door and even space. And in the event of an altercation, well, you've seen what my suit can do, and each conductor has something similar."
Bulma smiled. "Good to know." She ran her fingers along the walls for a moment. "What else can you show me?"
Cross smiled. "Would you like to learn to drive her?"
Bulma's eyes lit up like a child with a new present.
"And do repairs," Cross smiled wide, Bulma barely containing her excitement. "After all, while I'm training, someone has to drive."
Bulma swelled with delight. "I get to drive?"
Cross purred and nodded.
