Samantha, Saint and Noah sat at the medical office awaiting the paternity test. To say she wasn't anxious was an understatement. The atmosphere surrounding them was heavy with the potential outcome of the test, even though the results would take three days to come in. Noah on the other hand alternated between watching Samantha, and Saint. Sometimes he'd talk and interact with him and there'd be a flicker of longing in his gaze. She wondered if he felt nervous as her. If the results was what Noah expected, it was going to alter the fabric of their lives.
The room was silent except for the occasional whisper of movement and the soft beeping of medical equipment, as they waited for the procedure to be done, and then they were called.
They walked out half an hour later. Their steps were heavy as they made their way to their vehicles. Despite the tension and the weight of the moment, he walked with her to her car. "Samantha." They stopped at her car. "We're doing the right thing for Saint." She didn't say anything but held Saint tighter, her eyes reflecting a storm of emotions and turmoil. "He deserves to know his heritage, to have the whole picture."
"So if it shows you're his father, what are you going to do?"
With measured and sincere words, he said, "If the test shows I'm his biological father Samantha, I want to be totally involved in his life and carry out my duties to my son. I'd make up for all the moments I missed, and I'm going to make sure that Shaun pays for depriving me of what belongs to me."
She stepped back. "What do you mean. What would you do?"
You don't worry about it, but he shouldn't be allowed to abuse his profession. To prey on innocent people. To deprive others of the happiness they deserve."
"Noah, even though he did this, I love him. I hate knowing he played a deliberate part in me being with him and Saint not knowing you but he has always treated me good. He loves Saint. If I ask you to forgive him? Can we come to an arrangement if the partenity shows you're the father? Can you do that for Saint? Saint and his well being should be our top priority. Shaun is the only dad he's ever known."
"Because Shaun arranged it like that." Noah said between clenched teeth and then he looked away. "Saint and you will always be my priority, but Shaun. I don't think I'll ever get over the resentment of what he stole from us. Don't ask me too. I'll see you back here Thursday." Noah's eyes lingered on her and Saint before he left.
