"Hey? Hello?" Our group leader called out to me, "Are you okay?"
I looked up at Harold tiredly and shook my head yes.
"Good, good. Wanna come down to the tent area with us and eat supper with the rest of the group?" He pointed over his shoulder to the area that our small group was eating at. Paul waved his hands in he air like a madman when he saw me looking, indicating that he wanted me to go sit with him.
Paul was a geeky 21 year old college student, he wore nerd glasses and he was a ginger. He was tall, maybe about 6 feet while I stood around 5 feet and about 4 inches. You can also tell that he had a small crush on me by the way he always wanted to be around me. But I didnt mind it, I loved the company, I just didnt like to talk. I'm quite shy, people just scare me. Most of them, you just can't trust. So usually, I let others do the talking. Paul was wearing the same blue polo shirt with tan shorts and his black converses, like usual. Sometimes we have to wear the same clothes for days, maybe even weeks because we dont have many clothes. Most of us came to this camp and only had the clothes on their backs. With me though, I came when I was twelve. I grew out of my clothes and had to find others. So I have about three changes of clothes. I also try to wash them everyday in the lake that is near by our camp. But, like Paul, a lot of people dont wash their clothes. Maybe because they are mostly boys and they dont care.
I smiled up at Harold and stood up, he led me over to the middle of our campsite.
"How are you!" Paul asked excitedly.
I sat down next to him while Harold grabbed me a plate of food. I didn't answer Paul, I never did. I have been with these people since I was 12, but something about these people made me mute. Thing is, I think of them as family.
"Good," Paul mimicked in a girls voice. He has always answered for me so he could keep the convosation going.
"Thats good, I am also good. I found out that my younger brother might be alive still." He said excitedly. He has always talked about his younger brother. About how good of a brother he was, how good looking he was, and how he would set him and I up some day. I always laughed at that last part, I was already 19 and never had a crush or first love or even a first kiss. I have been fighting zombies since I was 12, so boys were always a last priority for me.
But when the world first went to shit, my brother and I looked for our sister Emily. She was younger than I was, three years younger to be exact. She was young and mother didnt trust Logan to babysit her. So she went to another babysitter. I was scared for her. Anything could have happened, she could have suffered from a zombie bite, or suffered by other survivors. We never found her though, I was hoping one day I would. I needed to find Emily, so I was curious on how he knew about his brother being alive.
"How do you know hes alive." I blurted out without thinking, I covered my mouth as Harold came by with my food. The food tonight wasnt bad, I guess the 'runners' did a good job with food hunting tonight because we had tuna fish sandwiches with potato chip. To me, that was a lot.
Paul gasped, "She talked! Harold she can talk!"
Shit I thought to myself.
"What's your name?" Paul asked hoping to get an answer.
"Megan." I whispered over to him.
"What, I couldn't hear you." He said through his smile.
"Megan." I said a bit louder.
Paul hugged me tightly, "Holy crap I didn't know you could even talk!"
"Thats what I was going for." I mumbled.
"Well Megan," he started to say as he got up out of his seat and grabbed an apple that was on the table. "You know what ?" he questioned me as he made his way back to his tent.
"What?" I answered.
"You my friend, should talk more often, you have a beautiful voice." He smirked as he entered his tent and zipped up the door.
