I sat on an uncomfortable wooden chair in the basement of who knows whose home and staired at the jar of ears that I had collected over the years. My collection started before the zombie apocalypse. Not with humans, but with dead animals on the street. I would always have a set of gloves and small pocket knife on me so that I'd always be prepared if I found an animal. But I have a cooler collection now. Being able to actually kill humans and taking a piece of them with me is so relaxing. Call me crazy but it calms me down.
"Jess? Honey? Are you okay?"
I quickly spin around in my chair to face the stairs. Quickly, I hid the jar in the dresser as I walked over to the stairs.
"Yes, I'm fine." I spoke out.
It was Samanthas mother.
"Samantha and them have been out for a while, do you think you and Mason could head down the street? They wouldnt have gone far."
Who does this woman think I am? I dont want to risk my life for her daughter, I barely knew her. But I told her I would help out. So I dragged myself over to my bed to pack up a bag and grab some of my weapons.
A brunette boy was already by the fromt door. His long brown hair was perfectly in place as he wore an old beat up hat backwards. The grey sweater he wore had a few rips in it but he pulled it off.
"You take a while to pack, dont cha?" He smiled at me, but I wasnt going to fall for no boys during this wicked world. I walked right out the door without a word as he followed me out.
The silence between us while we walked down the street was brutal. We didnt know each other and I have no idea why Sams mom would but us two together.
"So, uh- my names Mason." he said as he held out his hand for me to shake.
"Jessica." I ignored his handshake though.
*BANG*
The gunshot took us back a bit. It sounded like it was right in front of us. Squinting my eyes and covering them from the sun, I saw a small store where people ran around like chickens with their heads cut off.
I took off running over to the scene, Mason staggered behind me, trying to keep up.
Emily then jumped out of no where and landed straight in front of me.
Frightened I jumped back about 10 feet.
"Have you seen Megan? Sam?" She asked as Dan soon followed her out onto the street taking deep breaths with his hands kn his knees.
"No, we came to help though." Mason responded.
"We have to go back into the store." Emily stated the obvious as we all started sprinting over to the small building.
People were all over the place, pushing me, hitting me, trying to get the hell out of the store. But why?
"Split up! We'll meet back at the register!" Dan yelled over the noise of the people.
I ran towards the back, hoping to find an office or backroom that was hidden. Megan seemed smart enough to hide somewhere back here.
Opening one door to the right, it was a bathroom. I took out my knife and headed down to open all the stalls to make sure everything was safe.
When the bathroom had no one inside, I ran over to the next door to the left. It was a small office that had a back door.
Slowly and steadily I walked over to the back door, opening it I realized it went outdoors.
Samantha was back there, holding onto some canned food all alone. My lips soon developed an evil smile. I took out my gun and pointed it straight at the back of her head.
"Jess?" I heard before I could pull the trigger.
"Megan?" I questioned her.
She looked over at me then at Smidge. She knew.
"Where was that gun pointing." She sneered at me.
I didnt know what to say, I stood frozen, feeling guilty for what I wanted to do.
"Shes like my family." Megan pointed out, "If I see that gun pointing at anyone I love again. I'll personally kill you. Got it?"
