To us by grace alone the truth and light were given the promised Lord from heaven to all the world shown.

Make straight plain the way the lowly valleys rising the height of pride abasing His path all even lay.

The heart sincere and right heeds God's invitation and makes true preparation—It is the Lord's delight.

Verse 4: Prepare my heart Lord Jesus turn not from me aside and help me to receive You This blessed Adventide.
From stall and manger low come now to dwell within me I'll sing Your praises gladly and forth Your glory show.

Hymn 356: The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came
Text: Basque, c. 18th century Sabine Baring-Gould, 1834-1924
Music: Basque c. 18th century

Verse 1: The angel Gabriel from heaven came with wings as drifted snow with eyes as flame.
"All hail to thee, O lowly maiden, Mary, most highly favored lady."
Gloria!

Verse 2: "For know a blessed mother thou shall be. All generations laud and honor thee.
Thy son shall be Emmanuel by seers foretold, Most Highly Favored Lady."
Gloria!

Verse 3: Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head. "To me be as it pleaseth God." She said.
"My soul shall laud and magnify God's holy name."
Most Highly Favored Lady!
Gloria!

Verse 4: Of her Emmanuel the Christ was born in Bethlehem all on a Christmas morn.
And Christian folk throughout the world will ever say.
"Most Highly Favored Lady!"
Gloria!
This is my top favorite hymn of the Advent Hymns in the Hymnal I grew up with, Skylights.
Hymnal Note for 356: Mary was uniquely favored among women—chosen by God to give birth to His Son! She responded with firm faith in God's word of promise carried to her by the angel Gabriel.
"'She responded with firm faith'" someone who does in the gospels of the Bible does not and would not pray to the dead at anytime period of their life at all, Skylights.
