Contrary to what everyone seemed to believe, getting into the city was simpler than Thomas would have thought. Gally led the way, gray hoodie almost jarring to Newt and Thomas who were following after him.
They had debated splitting up with the others—but ultimately, it just seemed to be better this way. A small group would have better luck finding the weak points and sneaking around rather than a large group.
It was immediately clear to both Thomas and Newt that life had continued on in the city as normal. As if the Flare wasn't even a real problem. Sure, a few people within the city were wearing masks as a precaution. But everyone was going about their own business.
Gally led them up a flight of stairs in the plaza. Thomas almost stopped at the sight of so many buildings with holographic ads for WCKD—it was something straight out of a nightmare, honestly. And all built on a lie.
Taking the time to glance back at Newt and Thomas, Gally paused. "This is a long way from the Glade." Newt murmured.
"Fifteen minutes to curfew. Please be home in an orderly fashion," Came the robotic voice over the loudspeakers within the city.
A frown pulled on Gally's lips. "I know it's hard, but pretend you've seen it before. We've gotta get off the streets."
Newt exchanged the same look with Thomas—this whole thing was really out of hand. And they were seriously out of their depth. They knew that now. But that didn't stop them from wanting to save Minho and Bellamy.
WCKD tanks patrolled the streets, lights flashing and looking for any signs of life. They ducked behind a pillar and Gally just grit his teeth. "Well they've definitely upped security. I'm guessing you shanks had something to do with that."
"Or Bellamy." Newt murmured wearily.
"What'd she do? Bite them?" Gally demanded in a sarcastic tone.
Thomas just let out a sigh. "She probably killed someone again."
Gally nearly laughed, gaze sharpening on the group. "Are you being serious right now?"
"Oh yeah." Newt retorted. "If you thought she was dangerous in the Glade, you should see her now."
"Whatever, let's get outta here!" Gally led them across a street and back towards the wall. "Alright Newt, you're up!"
Newt was quick to be boosted up and onto the landing, tugging Thomas up after him. Once they were near one of the top shelves of the wall, they crept along carefully. The last thing they needed was a patrol finding them.
A staircase led them up onto the top of the wall and Gally pointed straight ahead at a black building lit up with neon blue lights. "There it is. If Bellamy and Minho are with WCKD, that's where they're keeping them." From his bag, Gally pulled out specs—attaching the binocular-like device to the railing. "Lawrence has been trying to find a way in for years. Place is crawling with soldiers. They've got surveillance everywhere. Scanners on every floor."
"Sounds like a bloody fortress," Newt murmured.
"I thought you said you had a way in," Thomas said pointedly, glancing over at Gally. All of that—and he hadn't mentioned his way in yet.
"I might," Gally replied.
"You might?" Thomas choked out. "What the hell do you mean might?" He demanded.
Gally just let out a sigh and gestured at the binoculars. "Take a look."
Thomas did—eyes immediately zeroing in on the girl with dark hair and wearing a red sweater. Teresa—his expression darkened as he lifted his head away from the machine.
