Bellamy could barely walk, but her grip on Thomas was strong and he pointed the gun at Ava Paige. As they had been walking there, Teresa's voice had filled the loudspeakers of the city—saying that they had finally found a cure.
And it was Thomas's blood.
"Is it true?" Thomas questioned, staring down Ava coldly. "Am I the Cure?"
Ava Paige's gaze flickered between the two teenagers—both full of anger and rage and cold unadulterated righteous fury. "You can save us all."
"Where are the samples you took?" Bellamy pressed, gaze darkening at the woman.
The woman took a few steps forward. "Bellamy, we need those—"
"No, no you don't. I want them now." Bellamy insisted.
Suddenly—a shot rang out. Thomas stared at his gun in surprise as Ava Paige dropped to the ground. But it wasn't him who had shot Ava Paige—it was Janson.
Janson stood there, gun still smoking as he stared down Thomas and Bellamy. "Put it down Thomas."
"No—"
"Put it down or I'll shoot her in the head."
Bellamy just looked at Thomas with wide eyes—she wanted him to just shoot Janson and be done with it. But he dropped the gun and that's when Janson struck. He jumped forward and slammed the butt of the gun into Thomas's neck—
Thomas dropped faster than Ava Paige had, hitting the ground and blinking in confusion. Bellamy just backed up, staring her own father down. "You don't have to do this." Bellamy said in a hoarse voice.
"You left me no choice."

When Thomas woke up, he was in Teresa's lab, strapped down to a table. Bellamy was on the ground, barely staying conscious with her own stomach wound. Upon further inspection, Thomas saw just how badly off Bellamy really was.
Her ribs were poking out of her threadbare tank top—cheeks were almost hollow. She had bruises covering nearly every inch of skin available, and she was bleeding heavily from a deep cut across her stomach.
"How much longer?" Janson questioned Teresa.
"It's almost done."
"Why don't you just kill us?" Thomas demanded, thrashing against his restraints.
"Why would I do that?" Janson questioned lightly. "I'm going to take special care of you two. We'll keep you alive, just...alive. And in return, you'll give life to the rest of us. The ones we choose to save, anyway. Of course there's not going to be enough for everyone. Hard choices are going to have to be made. In time, the Flare Virus will burn itself out. The only question is, who will be the ones left standing?"
"Not you." Bellamy murmured.
Janson just let out a cold emotionless laugh. "There it is again, that spirit I so admire and hate. Thanks to you and to this, we finally get to choose. A future of our own making," He held up the vial and revealed his own bite mark on his arm. "To your health—"
Teresa slammed a glass jar over his head and Janson slumped to the ground. Bellamy's eyes widened in surprise. "Did you just—"
"We've gotta get out of here!" Teresa had just managed to get one of Thomas's cuffs off when Janson got to his feet.
Bellamy reacted faster than anyone had thought she would be able to. She lunged, jumping onto Janson's back and stabbing a glass shard into his shoulder. He gave a scream of pain and flung her backwards.
