"Aise I love you, I love you karta rehta hai, aur ab jab mera birthday aane wala hai bas kuch hours mein, to janab ko office se firsat nahi hai." (He keeps saying I love you, I love you, and now when my birthday is just a few hours away, he doesn't have time from the office) Aadhira turned her face away, sulking over her husband, completely unaware of the surprises he had already planned for her.
Her birthday is just a few hours away now, and to say she wasn't excited would be an absolute lie. She was filled with excitement, especially about celebrating it with Kabir, the love of her life.
She couldn't help but imagine all the wonderful things he might do for her. She had already dropped hints about how she likes to celebrate her birthday, and she couldn't wait to see if he would pick up on them.
The best part of this birthday is her husband, who makes her feel cherished, and finally, her life feels sorted and complete. Things are finally getting better for her.
But slowly, her excitement began to fade as she glanced at the clock, which showed it was already 8 PM. Her mood sank further when she realized there was still no sign of her husband. He had already told her he would be late due to a last-minute meeting and asked her not to have dinner, which made her heart drop.
He informed her as if it were just any normal day. He had been busy with his so-called work for the past few days, and she had let it slide, thinking it was important. She didn't want to be a hindrance to his success, but now it was becoming too much for her to bear.
With each passing minute, her hopes of receiving any birthday surprise slowly faded away, leaving her feeling more alone and disappointed.
The only glimmer of hope she had was her mother, who had already gone to sleep without even wishing her in advance as she does every other time, splashing water on all her hopes.
She cursed her best friend for raising her expectations so high that she felt tears welling up again, just like in previous birthdays.
This time, though, the reason wouldn't be her father or anyone else; it would be her own overblown expectations.

She lay on the bed with a grim expression, scrolling through Instagram to distract herself when a knock caught her attention. She glanced at the already opened door of her room and saw Kiaan standing there, his hand resting behind his back. This made her frown as she sat up and gestured for him to come inside.
"What were you doing, bhabhi?" Kiaan asked, looking at her softly.
"Nothing, just passing the time and waiting for your brother," she replied, her voice dull and low.
"Ooh! So excited for the birthday?" he asked, and suddenly her sullen face brightened with a flicker of excitement. But she quickly managed to hide it.
"Birthday?" she asked, pretending to be unaware of Kiaan's intentions.
"Yess! It's your birthday tomorrow, right? So what have you guys planned for it?" he asked again, making her face fall. She had hoped he would have some plans, but instead, he was asking her the same question.
"Kaun se plans! Tumhare bhai ko to yaad bhi nahi hai mera birthday," (which plans? Here your brother doesn't even remebers my birthday) she pouted, feeling a mix of disappointment and frustration.
"Whattt?" he exclaimed, clearly surprised.
"Jee haaa," (yes) she replied, crossing her arms.
"Accha, ruko fir, let me call him," he said, pulling out his phone. But Aadhira snatched the phone away before he could make the call. "Let him remember on his own, or else I am not celebrating my birthday," she declared, her voice firm but laced with sadness.
